Puerto Rico’s Colonial Legacy and Its Continuing Economic Troubles

Puerto Rico’s Colonial Legacy and Its Continuing Economic Troubles

Lara Merling

When Puerto Rico was hit by Hurricane Maria, the island was ill-equipped to handle the storm that claimed thousands of lives and devastated most of the island's infrastructure, leaving it in the dark for months.

Puerto Rico will continue to be suppressed until it can be brought to such a state of desperation that those who will ultimately infuse cash (on their very favorable terms) can maximize their profit margin yet still get in before the competition. A very perverse waiting game. The land values will depreciate. The labor force will grow evermore desperate. Any social safety nets will largely unravel. Disaster Capitalism (bless you Naomi Klein for your enlightenment) all the way. For the love of money is the root of all evil.
