Rebuffing Prime Minister's Order to Stay in Class, Australian Students Forge Ahead With #ClimateStrike Walkouts

Julia Conley, staff writer

As the United Nations issued its latest report detailing the climate emergency facing humanity—finding that world governments must triple their efforts to reduce carbon emissions in order to stop the dangerous warming of the globe—schoolchildren in Australia demonstrated that young people are largely taking the lead in fighting the climate crisis while many of their elected officials debate scientific conclusions and argue in favor of protecting corporate polluters' profit

Like our young people taking the gun issue head on when politicians are faltering. I guess we get fat and lazy when we get older and just don’t want to get our hair wet like Donny at the cemetery.

“Mommy, why do you and Daddy hate me so much as to vote for ‘conservatives’? In school we were taught about conservation. Shouldn’t those terms be just about who, how, and why for the same cause?”

How to hold a hunger banquet:

Grandpa and/or grandma gets a full plate.

Dad and/or Mom gets about 3/4 of a meal.

The kids get 1/3 of a meal. (Hint: overfeed the kids an hour before the hunger banquet to avoid a scene.)

You know, if this were giving Tuesday then we’d be seeing people donating to invent things that lower or end demand for fossil fuels. The fossil fuel industry would hate that, but whatever.

Australia has coal and Canada has tar sands. Both are run by oligarchs who have no concern for anything but more money.

Money is a fetish taught from childhood by Donal Duck, Micky Mouse and Santa Claus. Some never leave this mind bending input during childhood and turn it into a lifelong game of monopoly. More money is their meaning of life. Children sense this dark deal with the devil more easily because they have not yet been converted to capitalist morals.

I hope ScoMo (Scott Morrison) is not re-elected PM. He believes in destroying the environment, Islamophobia, homophobia, endless wars, letting Christian schools bar LGBT students & letting health clubs ban yoga because its origins are Hindu (non-Judaeo-Christian). He despises Eastern & other non-Judaeo-Christian Faiths. He gets along nicely with Donald Chump the Chimp, Melania Chump the Chimp & Theresa Mayfly Mayhem.

Some issues belong to world government.

  1. no war
  2. reduce polluting practices
  3. clean up the mess that has already been made
  4. deal with immigration compassionately and expediently

Would a strong world government work?
Can we continue to let individual countries screw up the rest of us?

HI Helen: I think if we got rid of wars, that pollution would reduce a lot, and as we still haven’t finished cleaning up Vietnam----we could send troops back there on a big ship that said: Mission was Not Accomplished—we left a mess." And if we cleaned up all the evils of our wars —then people wouldn’t need to immigrate because they would have clean, non polluted nations. WAR kills just about everything. : ( That has to go first!

Note these are young students protesting. Why aren’t they voluntarily led by an amalgam of Christian clergy?

The clergy are part of the problem, not part of any solution.

Young people the world over need to rise up. We the older generation have allowed a mess. Don’t become like us.

" Rebuffing Prime Minister’s Order to Stay in Class"

The so-called federal ‘prime minister’ has zero power to ‘order’ the children to stay in school (other reports termed it ‘implored’). It would be in the prerogative of authorities in the states or territories where the children went to school to take some sort of action but with a majority of states and territories having Labor Party governments (the current opposition in the federal parliament) that is unlikely.

Morrison’s noises are also part of the death spiral of a minority government that trails its opposition by 8 to 10 points and is facing a general election in 2019.

PM’s are not elected. They are simply the leader of the political party - chosen by a party committee - who become PM if their party achieves a majority in an election. PM’s can be changed at any time. The current right-wing ruling government in Australia has already changed PM’s two times.

Curious…when are we going to see high-schoolers do anything like this in the USA?

It has never been more obvious that “the children are our future” than lately as our young take up the causes that our bought-and-paid-for politicians have no interest in addressing. As the father of one of them, I couldn’t be any prouder!

They have already, you just haven’t been paying attention.
