The Red for Ed movement likely immortalized 2018 as a banner year for labor organizing among public school teachers. That fervor isn’t dissipating in 2019.
Teachers, nurses, government workers, and service workers need to join forces to form a new labor movement outside of the corrupt, corporate unions like the AFL-CIO. The old unions are just as likely to act as a roadblock to worker demands as they are to support them. The AFL-CIO’s acceptance of the police unions into their ranks exposed their corruption as the police will always face the picket lines of their brothers and sisters while protecting the property of their corporate masters. The UAW should be calling for nationwide stikes in support of the Matamoro strikes and US plant closing but instead do nothing.
