'Say Goodbye to Local Media,' as Trump FCC Opens Corporate Merger Floodgates

Jessica Corbett, staff writer

"Today will go down in history as the day when the FCC abdicated its responsibility to uphold the core values of localism, competition, and diversity in broadcasting."

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai

If only the Democrats were remotely as good as the sh*theel Republicans at achieving their goals.

#3

The CIA propaganda machine wins all. It can now promote war everywhere.

#4

And thus television et al becomes the vast wasteland it has stood accused of propagating.

#5

Shame at this rate the internet might quickly follow suit. Goodbye free speech and dissenting opinions! Those are thought crimes now. Just look at the recent assault on RT for proof of this

#6

It is almost as if their “goals” are just a smokescreen to hide that both parties want the same thing.

#7

Pirate Radio?

#8

The Propaganda machine is rolling full steam ahead. That worked well in other fascist systems, too…/

#9

This is all too depressing to even comment on!

Thank God for CommonDreams and the few really great and independent news sources still remaining.

I think I’ll watch the George Carlin clip - thank God he left us that!!!

Mao Tse Tung leader of China had the brainy idea of killing all the birds because he thought they were eating the grain. No one dared set him straight. 30 million died. The emperor has no clothes. That’s the kind of world we are heading for. If we ever get out of this, I hope those extremely rich few with some sense realize how precious democracy really is. You don’t always get what you want, but someone will generally set you straight and disaster can be averted. But democracy needs the participants to have integrity and that seems to be sorely missing and possibly always has been.

They will only realize that when their money can no longer save them or put themselves above others.

#12

The Democratic Party establishment (the one in control that you don’t know about) has the very same goal as the Republicans Party. This is all determined by the mega donors.

#13

It is an essential component of Fascism. First they got rid of the Fairness Doctrine. Then it was Clinton signing the Telecommunications Act.

#14

I said good bye to local media a long time ago. NPR hasn’t even been worth listening to.

#15

Gore Vidal described our system as "one party with two right wings."
More than ever, that is the case,

“Shame at this rate the internet might quickly follow suit. Goodbye free speech and dissenting opinions!”

Not gonna happen. Someone once said “Information is the oxygen of the modern age. . . . It seeps through the walls topped with barbed wire. It wafts across the electrified, booby-trapped borders. Breezes of electronic beams blow through the Iron Curtain as if it was lace.”

BTW, there’s no assault on RT. They had to register as foreign agent because they are the propaganda arm of the Russian government. Kinda like Radio Free Europe or Voice of America for the US government.

By that logic all other countries in the world should register CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, and all the other mainstream U.S. news media as foreign agents, because they are nothing but the propaganda arm of the US government.
