WASHINGTON - Scientists, environmental and consumer groups denounced the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s deregulation of the Arctic® apple, the first genetically engineered apple, produced by a Canadian corporation, Okanagan Specialty Fruits. The USDA’s deregulation technically allows the Arctic® apple to be planted and sold without specific oversight, although the FDA may engage Okanagan in a voluntary safety consultation process prior to the GMO apple being available on the U.S. market.
Scientists, Environmental and Consumer Groups Denounce USDA Approval of Genetically Engineered Apple
This denouncement is a welcome counterpoint to the ludicrous propaganda spewing from Okanagan Specialty Fruit. The spectacular misinformation includes Neal Carter's "Ted X Talk" where during pronouncements about Hawaii's papaya crop being "saved" by the notorious, farmer and farmgate-price crushing GMO "Rainbow" papaya that has contaminated most Hawaii grown papaya. Midway through Carter features a slide of an African farmer harvesting manioc! Perfect example, if egregiously racist and categorically false (see real reports of GMO effects on factors like yield and farmer sustainability in reports from sources ranging from the UN FAO'S IAASTD, Greenpeace's report on Hawaiian Papaya and La Via Campesina,)
With this outrageous assumption of public consent to manipulate another treasured and quintessentially healthful food, domesticated as a legacy by our ancestors...the Biotech industry has gone too far. Here comes the backlash. email@example.com
