DEVELOPING

In a major, stunning upset, New York progressive Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez won a shocking landslide victory over 10-term Democratic Congressman Joe Crowley, chair of the House Democratic caucus, in the Congressional primary election on Tuesday in New York's 14th Congressional District covering the Bronx and Queens.

With 90% of the vote counted, Ocasio-Cortez leads Crowley by 57.8% to 42.2%.

“This race is about people versus money. We’ve got people. They’ve got money,” Ocasio-Cortez said throughout her campaign.

This is great news! I know a lot of folks here disagree with me, but this is why progressives need to get more involved in the party, not less. Follow the example of conservative evangelicals in the 60s and 70s with the Republican Party, or civil rights organizers with the Democrats in the 40s and 50s. Parties do change, we’ve seen it in our lifetimes.

#3

I suspect it was largely Queens v. The Bronx. Good for The Bronx.

#4

Right on! the new leadership - Woman, Latina, Young, Progressive.

#5

A feel good moment, hoping there are many more.

#6

I have a progressive running in my district and she beat the DINO – if enough progressives get elected in November not only will it cause problems for the Republicans, but it will also show Democan’ts that they have to stop being muggwumps and Republicans-the-lesser.

#7

Does NY have a sore loser law?

I’m wondering if we’re going to have a Lieberman redux here.

#8

Fantastic! And a crystal ball revelation into the upcoming future. I think we can really get used to this.

#9

Not so sure that I agree with you. Ocasio-Cortez is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), whose membership is blossoming with young people. I’d just as soon see many of her colleagues similarly trounce other ensconced corporate-owned Dems across this nation. They should waste as little time as possible with the current flotsam in the party. Those in power are not going to change.

#10

Agree - a favorite saying among DSA’ers is that . .

We should treat the Democratic Party with the same contempt as everyone else.

#11

The Pelosi, Schumer, Manchin, Heitkamp, et al corporate Zionist capitalist DINO controllers need to pay attention to this inspiring victory and echo Ocasio-Cortez instead of slagging Maxine Waters and bending over for Trump.
Get a clue and a conscience, corporate Dems; become truly progressive, or continue to lose while continuing to betray America.

#12

I feel so happy that Alexandria won in a landslide!
Congratulations Alexandria!

Yet another Progressive Democrat defeated a Corporate Democrat.
Progressives are winning elections and gaining momentum.

My hope for the future just improved a bit.

#13

Crowley endorsed Ocasio- Cortez. Maybe he’ll run against De Blazio or Cuomo ( only half snarking ). Here’s hoping they all choke on their lobbying checks.
FYI- Another Congresswoman is in a real cliffhanger in NYC. They rigged their own primary and are still peeing in their pinstripes.

#14

Umm…Do you really think that Pelosi, Schumer, Manchin, Heitkamp, et al can truly develop a conscience? I’d much rather they be sent packing. As long as they exist, they will fight tooth and nail against anything that even hints of socialism.

#15

Wait. She ran in a primary on the Democratic ballot, right? If so, that’s exactly what I am talking about.

#16

No…

#17

Where is LRX, to rain on her parade?

#18

Must be past his/her bedtime.

#19

1500 plus world $billionaires against socialism; however, I agree with you, totally.

I do not think the issue as much the individual candidates as it the Party apparatus that behind them. You do not get rid of this group via publicly elected officials. It pretty well the same across the board in every country.

The handlers get a hold of the very best of people and what comes out the other end is not what went in. Ms Oscacio-Cortez knows the Republicans and what they stand for but her success will be predicated on how will she resists those others Like the Pelosi’s. Clinton’s and the like. I wish her the best of luck for all your sakes.
