Shock Doctrine: A Look at the Mass Privatization of NOLA Schools in Storm’s Wake & Its Effects Today

Democracy Now!

Just two weeks after Hurricane Katrina, the city fired 7,500 public school teachers, launching a new push to privatize the school system and build a network of charter schools. Many accused lawmakers of trying to break the powerful United Teachers of New Orleans union. Today former President George W. Bush will return to the city to speak at the Warren Easton Charter High School.

Where's the rest of the article? What am I missing?
In any case, the shock doctrine and disaster capitalism are all about privatization and union bashing. There's a war on the real public schools and their unionized teachers. The right to work states have pretty much busted the unions and destroyed teacher rights. The union haters don't want teachers to have any rights or bargaining power. The so called school reformers want at-will employees who can be fired for no reason or any reason and who don't hang around too long. The school privatizers love the new less expensive teachers and hate the veteran and more expensive teachers.

Are charter schools required to hire teachers holding the same certifications as public school teachers or can the charters hire anybody they want and call them teachers ?

As shock doctrine mayor Rahm Emanuel said: "never waste a good crisis".

I can't help but think of Detroit, another city suffering under a shock doctrine, although Detroit's disaster was not weather related, but one created by US free trade policies. Both cities are being privatized and gentrified, and both are predominantly Black cities. If it only requires a disaster, natural or manufactured, to reinvent whole cities, the wholesale destruction of communities and culture will repeat itself over and over again in our oligarchic state. This does not bode well for anybody who is not rich and white.
