Senator Ted Cruz, raising cash for a 2016 presidential bid, was to meet privately Monday in Denver, Colorado with executives from major oil and gas corporations, all members of the pro-fracking lobby group Western Energy Alliance (WEA), according to details of the secret meeting shared with the Center for Media and Democracy.

There are 3 prongs to the viability of candidates like Cruz.
First, they get enormous financial backing since they have no moral scruples about doing Big Energy's agenda, for them.
Second, they use the promise of job creation which goes over big since in reality, decent jobs are scarce.
The third factor which is as ritualistically ignored in this Progressive site's comment threads as is the case in any Christian Theological community, is the way that Fundamentalist Christians oppose honest discussions about global warming for 3 main reasons:
First, they are taught that God is in control and so long as they believe in their limited version of "God," they will be saved.
Second: Most believe in End Times and they've been long-conditioned to see God as a punishing father figure. Millions of followers of this narrow religious view actually anticipate the Earth Changes as part of a cleansing cycle they feel they need do nothing to stop.
Third: The Judeo-Christian premise that God gave man DOMINION over the earth (including its resources and other living beings) makes it seem that whatever enterprising men/corporations do--regardless of the trauma and rape done to the precious Mother and her countless ecosystems--is "justified."
These are strongly entrenched beliefs in at least half this nation's population, possibly more. And trying to bring truth, science or enlightenment to a person of religious conviction, however faith-based and erroneous is dangerous. People have been shot at, executed, or burned as witches for far less.
Nonetheless, with ALL of our lives now on the line as natural systems continually implode in increasingly dangerous ways, it's imperative to try to raise consciousness with the hope that no state will find itself governed by one who would exchange his or her personal status for the complete desecration of habitable ecosystems, clean water tables, and arable soils.

Of course, any "honest commenter" will immediately recognize, Common Dreams' commenting community is just like any Christian Theological community! There's such a clear mentality here that clamps down on any honest assessment of the motivations and arguments of Christian Theologicals, regarding global warming and every other issue! We probably all read the Left Behind series and dream of the Rapture!
As ALWAYS, Susan is compelled to post insults. As ALWAYS, she imputes specific ugly characteristics and motivations to others, whom she does not engage, but instead smears, by making claims about what others believe and say, and then insulting them for the words she has put in their mouths and the ideas she has asserted are in their minds.
i noticed (following up on an e-mail alert yesterday) that Cruz had signed on as a co-sponsor of the legislation now in the Senate to limit the reach of the EPA in upholding and enforcing the Clean Water Act, but had then withdrawn his name as a co-sponsor.
i assume he is attempting to position himself as a "viable" candidate for President, but it's hard to see how backing off from one piece of extremist corporatist legislation would make any difference, with his clear long litany of public statements outlining his extremist pro-corporatist positions.
