That's It. Eight Years Later, Obama White House Admits Gitmo Won't Close

Andrea Germanos, staff writer

The Obama administration made clear Tuesday that it would not be fulfilling its promise to close the notorious Guantánamo Bay prison.

Speaking to reporters, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said, "I don't anticipate that we will succeed in that goal of closing the prison, but it's not for a lack of trying. "

The quote in your 2nd sentence shows how willfully misleading the word "admits" is in your headline. Read any one of the defense funding bills of the 8 years, and you'll see why Gitmo isn't closed. It's about GOP obstruction, not failure.

Here is a great article that details the whole mess. One of the sticking points was the consequence of torture having been used, relative to US trials moving forward, etc. Obama of course, was against criminal investigation of anyone involved with formulating torture policy, or those who carried it out. And that point is entirely relevant to why Gitmo remains open.
