The Chickens Come Home to Roost in Baltimore

Marjorie Cohn

Once again, the nation watches as prosecutors deal with the killing of an unarmed black man.

“[The officers] failed to establish probable cause for Mr. Gray’s arrest as no crime had been committed by Mr. Gray . . . Accordingly, [he was] illegally arrested,” Baltimore state’s attorney Marilyn Mosby declared, as she announced the filing of criminal charges against the six officers implicated in Freddie Gray’s death.

Does anyone know why : "The Maryland Medical Examiner “believed (it) to be the result of a fatal injury that occurred when Mr. Gray was unrestrained by a seatbelt in the custody of the Baltimore Police Department wagon.”" ?

Observers can see that Gray was screaming before the rides. He is on video being dragged to the van with his feet trailing - lacking in the normal human responses. What is observed is consistent with the damage being done before the ride.

Could the lack of seatbelts be saving police officer's lives?

“Probable cause was distorted by the drug war,” David Simon, creator of The Wire, said in an interview with Bill Keller. Set in Baltimore, the award-winning HBO series portrayed the conflict between the police and African Americans in the streets, in a compelling work of historical fiction. “[T]he drug war was as much a function of class and social control as it was of racism,” Simon added. “The drug war gives everybody permission to do anything. It gives cops permission to stop anybody, to go in anyone’s pockets, to manufacture any lie when they get to district court.” In short, under the guise of the war on drugs, Baltimore police have been harassing people for years. "

I, for one, have been pointing this out for years. Witnessing the "Zero Tolerance" policy for drugs--apart from the myriad concoctions regularly parlayed by Big Pharma--seize homes and vehicles across the Florida Keys under the direction of then Drug Czar Martinez, I saw in this behavior a major inroad into the destruction of several enshrined Civil Liberties including "the right to privacy."

I also recall a debate on possibly C-Span where 5 people with esteemed legal backgrounds were discussing this very thing and it was only the female guest who pointed out that shaking people down was hardly demonstrative of that right to privacy. She stated outright that the war on drugs was a total fraud.

In the same way that U.S. weapons producers use elite channels to fill unstable nations with arms while at the same time, a "War on Terror" is ludicrously underway, the war on drugs likewise CREATES the problem that it's ostensibly in place to control, contain or eradicate.

It's impossible to know how far in advance the Project for a New American Century (and its members) had its sights set on igniting an ongoing Middle East inferno. Nonetheless, stealth efforts and protocols aimed at GRADUALLY decimating established Civil Liberties were, and continue to be, part of a sinister calculus.

Lastly, I watched this objective begin to materialize while still in high school. Among many thousands protesting ON the White House lawn--itself converted into a mini-Woodstock in a massive protest against the Vietnam War that had Nixon peering out at giant effigies of himself being ignited... it later became clear to me that criminalizing recreational drug use would be a most excellent strategy for knee-capping peace-oriented left-leaning "enemies" of right wing, militaristic-authoritarian polices aimed at foreign lands and later, our own... as is now patently the case.

Yes. Karmic blowback is underway with U.S. cities increasingly coming to resemble shantytowns from 3rd world nations under the control of lawless dictators.

When under Rudy G. NYC began its "stop-and-frisk" practice many citizens were thus "legally" terrorized. Then again, this happened starting in 2002 after the narrative of being attacked by those who "hated us for our freedoms".

Apparently he slammed into a bolt in the back of the van.

Gotta make sure US cops are ready to bash the heads of all the Americans who will be protesting when they lose their jobs as a result of Obama's TTP and TTIP.
