The Deadly Rule of the Oligarchs

The Deadly Rule of the Oligarchs

Chris Hedges

Oligarchic rule, as Aristotle pointed out, is a deviant form of government. Oligarchs care nothing for competency, intelligence, honesty, rationality, self-sacrifice or the common good. They pervert, deform and dismantle systems of power to serve their immediate interests, squandering the future for short-term personal gain.

#2

Right on! This is exactly where we are now and why we are where we are! So, Chris Hedges is calling for REVOLT!

#3

Right on, Chris! You nailed it!

Thanks again to Common Dreams for continuing to republish the radical analysis of Chris Hedges. A clear light cutting through the shadows of phony neoliberal “resistance” to Trumpism.

We do, indeed, need a democratic revolt against the tiny class of self-interested, self-justifying and self-aggrandizing “elites” who claim to “own” our world.

One of the best ever from Chris! This essay makes it easier to see exactly what is unfolding, and why; and pretty much covers all of the aspects of the degradation in the quality of life that is going according to plan as a consequence of the process of total control by oligarchs and
their enablers. If their is any hope for the masses, it exists only in some form of Socialism.

So much of what we used to take for granted is now being stolen…yes, stolen…from us as the Oligarchy strengthens its takeover. The goal being ultimate privatization of everything that was once Public When they talk about “Infrastructure improvement” they don’t mean our municipal water and sewer systems. Nor do they mean Public Parks, Public Beaches or Public Schools. They certainly don’t mean Universal Single-Payer Healthcare!

What they mean is fossil fuel extraction and transportation infrastructure, any anything else that they need to make more money.

The slow motion coup is nearly complete. This is why Hedges is trying to shine a light into this darkness before it is too late. Hedges gets it! Rockstroh gets it! Buchheit and several others get it.

Unless and until the 80-90% accept the fact that we’re all in this together, realize who our real enemies are and develop a much greater degree of empathy and community….very unpleasant times are bound to come upon us.

The Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival is We the Poor Peoples’ last chance to save ourselves and Mom Earth from a very few, but very, very sick, racist sycophant politicians. These pay-to-play wiseguys are kissing-up to the the violent, bankster-types, (and even their trust-fund, psychopathic off-spring, as in our current Oval Office occupier). Seems these new wealth-holding humanoids, see “its/their” flaunting and ramming of obscene mountains of ill-gotten cash around, as some sort of “prideful”, moral achievement. Jeremy Corbin sees this in the U.K., too but looks like his Labor Party is about to take back the rule of power from their bankster ilk.

Here, in the U.S., it will be The Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival that will force a moral revival, first at the state capitol level, then in close order, on to the “House that slaves built” - Our Capitol. We the Poor People (not poor yet? lol - Read the writing on the wall! lol - before - 'cuz We/YOU ARE NEXT!) Mother’s Day officially starts The Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival

The National Press Briefing was December 4, 2017 and can be seen at The Real News Network archive - http://therealnews.com/t2/story:20628:Poor-People's-Campaign%3A-A-National-Call-for-Moral-Revival

You know it’s always been this way with our culture, the culture from which we emerge is causing the demise of the culture.
The cultural stories myths we tell ourselves are fallacies passed down from generation to generation through millenia. They have nothing to do with actual reality only beliefs .These beliefs based on what we believe god/Life wants and needs are based on a yesterdays god .

This is not something that many people want to look at .
Yesterday’s god has been characterised as a pretty much of an every -man- for-himself kind of god.Thats because the Old God is understood to seperate from human beings and Yesterdays Spirituality says that human beings are seperate from each other.
Look at our world billions live in poverty ,where people can’t meet the basic needs of food ,safe pure drinking water ,housing and daily survival is the only thing on your mind.
This is because have an economic system the purpose of which is to generate profit.

Where does this idea come from why does life work like this on planet Earth .
From the dual illusions of Insufficiency and Disunity our economy emerges. The idea that there is “not enough “ of what humans need to be happy ,and the idea that human beings are seperate from each other ,forms the basis of our entire economic model.
The way out is creating a New Spirituality that will naturally provide us with a new basis of our entire economic model.

To generate wealth for the highest good of all the common good .

Presently on our planet ,wealth is defined as possessions and power .The Old Spirituality encourages us to have dominion over the Earth .We have interpreted this to mean domination .And so ,we have imagined that ownership of,or power over ,people ,places and things is an asset— or part of what we have called “wealth”.
According to this paradigm ,the more things we owned ,the more power we have ,and the wealthier we are.

For further understanding read Tomorrow’s God by Neale Donald Walsch …time to save our precious beautiful Blue Planet from wrong thinking and misunderstanding …an evolution revolution is going on it’s the most peaceful of all revolutions .A Spritual solution is the only way we can solve our dilemmas .

There’s plenty of dispute over what we see, and wether the actual problems are private persons and property, or the distorted mess which results from over governance and State power creating problems in everything they touch.

Finland appears to present an alternative reality.

I really liked this article from ‘The Guardian’, and I have subscribed to their ‘good news’ initiative.

#11

With all due respect, BZ, I suggest that you consider dropping the first part of your campaign’s name. The second part is powerful.

#12

Thanks for the example. The U.S. (and, for that matter, any country) could have this, too. “We” just prefer things the way they are now.

#13

Good article! Thanks. If only the U.S. could follow Finland’s example. I like that the leaders are philosophers. Here in our country, academics are distrusted. It’s big business that gets all the kudos and power. Of course, capitalism reigns here–not cooperation.

Like I said several months ago, 1984 . . .   Here At Last!!!

Another unconvincing essay.

“the oligarchs educate their children in private schools and buy them admissions into elite universities (this is how a mediocre student like Jared Kushner went to Harvard and Donald Trump went to the University of Pennsylvania), so they see no need to fund good public education for the wider population.”

So how come we have great public education? Is Hedges trying to say that the University of California at Berkley is not a great school. Or North Carolina, Virginia, UCLA, Michigan, etc. How could that be in a oligarchy? The answer of course is because the US is not an oligarchy. Electing Democrats as the majority will produce good things for the public. The main concern now isn’t that the US will become an oligarchy, but that it will be become a fascist state run by white supremacists not the benefit of the wealthy but the benefit of only one race, whites.

" They lose touch with reality. In the end, they are overthrown or destroy the state itself. There is no institution left in America that can be called democratic, and thus there is no internal mechanism to prevent a descent into barbarity."

My man Chris Hedges with a double barrel of unvarnished in your face truth. I call him a prophet to myself, a truth teller shouting his truth to a world gone deaf.

#17

Well you have bits of truth throughout your blathering. The corporate fascist state you refer to is what Hedges in the article referred to from Sheldon Wolin’s book…an “inverted totalitarian state”…they ARE the oligarchs. They are one in the same. Then you also dispute that the rich don’t have access to all the best schools starting from birth…that they don’t help each other make sure that it is their children that succeed? What freaking planet have you been on to dispute that obvious fact. The White Supremacists are just another dog on the corporate fascist leash. They are nothing to fear on their own…but they damn sure divert you from what their masters are doing.

#18

For all the people that have bought into the narrative that a democratic landslide in 2018 will change the political landscape, please realize that Chris Hedges knows that is just another con for the naive and politically ignorant masses.

#19

Possibly your weakest comment ever.

We should remember what was said in the past and what hasn’t changed at all

“You do not need the capitalist. He could not exist one second without you. You would begin to live without him. You DO everything. Some of you imagine that if it was not for the capitalist you would have no work. Really he does not employ you at all. You employ him to take from you what you produce, and he sticks faithfully to his job. If you can stand it – he can – and if you don’t change it – he won’t.” - Eugene Debs
