The Fight to Rein in NSA Surveillance: 2016 in Review

Kate Tummarello

It’s been a busy year on a number of fronts as we continue to fight to rein in the National Security Agency’s sweeping surveillance of innocent people. Since the 2013 leaks by former government contractor Edward Snowden, the secretive and powerful agency has been at the top of mind for those thinking about unconstitutional surveillance of innocent Americans and individuals abroad.

In 2016 the courts, lawmakers, and others continued to grapple with questions of how much we know about NSA surveillance.

The National Security State is coming at this issue with multiple barrels loaded so as to control and monitor the US populace. Not only are they interested in what Americans chose to read via surveillance programs and NSA monitoring but they want to limit just what the citizen can access in the first place under the NDAA and limiting of what available to them.

This happens in the EU as well where the Government has proposed a 50000 Euro fine every time an entity like Facebook posts a link to what is deemed "fake news" by the State,

Further to that both the Government and the Corporate State are being further merged through things such as "astroturfing"

This is where the Corporation or State secretly funds organizations deemed independent to promote studies or provide information to the reader that is deemed in the best interests of those groups. As example to promote a new drug the drug companies will hire groups that do "letters to the editor" claiming how well it works or will ensure search engines used by people seeking more information always link to studies that conclude said drug is effective. Corporations that produce GMOS will do the same.

The Corporate State has fund that this method in very many ways more effective then both advertising and Government lobbying.

By controlling the flow of information so that the Citizen reads only what the Corporation or Government wants said Citizen to access, the very behavior of the population is controlled. This both their political behavior and their pattern of consumption of the products the Corporations want them to consume.

All alternative information sources will be deemed Enemy propaganda or the work of "quacks and nuts who do not follow the scientific method".

I see no evidence these guys are being reined in. I see them gaining even more powers.
