Still retaining the faith that capitalism can be reformed in a way to benefit the well-being of people and the planet and that there is nothing inherently at fault with the exchange economy.
I’m sure you are aware that Marx was a keen environmentalist who studied the work of Justus Liebig.
Marx’s conception of communal property does not see this property as conferring a right to overexploit land and other natural conditions in order to serve the production and consumption needs of the associated producers. Instead, the association treats “the soil” and other natural conditions “as eternal communal property, an inalienable condition for the existence and reproduction of a chain of successive generations of the human race”
From the standpoint of a higher economic form of society, private ownership of the globe by single individuals will appear quite as absurd as private ownership of one man by another. Even a whole society, a nation, or even all simultaneously existing societies taken together, are not the owners of the globe. They are only its possessors, its usufructuaries, and, like boni patres familias , they must hand it down to succeeding generations in an improved condition.”
Marx in volume 1 of Capital writes
"Capitalist production…disturbs the metabolic interaction between man and the earth, i.e. prevents the return to the soil of its constituent elements consumed by man in the form of food and clothing; it therefore violates the conditions necessary to lasting fertility of the soil…The social combination and organization of the labor processes is turned into an organized mode of crushing out the workman’s individual vitality, freedom and independence…Moreover, all progress in capitalist agriculture is a progress in the art, not only of robbing the worker, but of robbing the soil; all progress in increasing the fertility of the soil for a given time is a progress towards ruining the more long-lasting sources of that fertility. The more a country starts its development on the foundation of modern industry, like the United States, for example, the more rapid is this process of destruction. Capitalist production, therefore, develops technology…only by sapping the original sources of all wealth—the soil and the worker.”
Capitalism and a benign harmonious relationship with nature are cannot be reconciled…no matter what fiscal policies are implemented.
Worth the effort to read as it touches on MMT as a false solution
Pie in the sky, technoutopian, consumerist capitalist wishful thinking = this article.
This author is full of delusion, and what’s worse, she’s spreading it around.
Manmade climate change is just one symptom of anthropogenic mass extinction caused by human overpopulation, consumption and pollution.
Living soil and organic, veganic, biodynamic agriculture is fantastic, but it won’t fix the “climate crisis.”
Only by lowering population growth and a complete, radical deep ecology reorientation of our species can we avoid total destruction of the biosphere within few decades.
The Climate Catastrophe is caused by carbon emissions. The population-control Nazis never tire of linking anything with population, even when it’s so poorly correlated as carbon emissions. Refresher for anyone vulnerable to population-control distractions: 1% of Earth’s humans are responsible for 50% of emissions. No matter, DavidCarson will go on obliviously and hatefully blowing his Nazi trumpet.
For pity’s sake, people: The global population may be subject to terribly severe controls, out of our control, before you know it. I wish the Nazis would find somewhere else to work out their disintegrative issues.
Ellen Brown sez:
The problem may be that a transition to 100% renewables is the wrong target. Reversing climate change need not mean emptying our pockets and tightening our belts. It is possible to sequester carbon and restore our collapsing ecosystem using the financial resources we already have, and it can be done while at the same time improving the quality of our food, water, air and general health.
But wait, there’s more: it whitens teeth, it freshens breath, it spruces up your sex life!
But seriously, folks: Enough with the infantilizing invitations to green growth credulity. Comparing the relative damage of the myths from the fossil fuel industry, and those of greengrowths like the author of this dreck, it really is a toss-up assessing which mass of delusion is the most destructive.
I’ve tried to explain science and simple logical facts to you before, and you refuse to understand. But you mislead other people so I will explain it again:
- Every human except for a few indigenous people is fed, clothed, sheltered, provided energy by and otherwise sustained by the worldwide petroindustrial grid. The more people, the more carbon emissions.
- Your ludicrous ad hominem “Nazi” lies are disgusting. Anthropogenic mass extinction is what our species is causing–the ecocidal killing of the entire biosphere, and it goes way beyond carbon emissions. It has nothing to do with Hitler or Nazis.
- You claim “1% of Earth’s humans are responsible for 50% of emissions.” That is yet another total lie from you. Here are the facts: https://www.ucsusa.org/resources/each-countrys-share-co2-emissions
Stop shilling for gestation slavery, ecocide, and more and more suffering humans.
And stop being a stalker trolling my comments. Go elsewhere to work out your disintegrating self.
I just looked out the window to hearing a very loud large diesel engine going slowly by on the dirt road. It’s been sprinkling snow all day, barely, and the confiers are green instead of white but at least the sticky mud of the last few days has frozen over.
There should be four feet of snowpack out there and mostly all I see is grass and dirt between patches of thin crusty ice that didn’t melt off in the 40s/50’F temperatures of the last week.
Solving the climate crisis? Maybe our species should stop clearcut logging the day after Christmas. That would be a good way to start don’t you think?
Big sigh. All talk no actionable change observed.
Back in 2015 Oxfam found the wealthiest 10% responsible for half of emissions. The update is from a recent column by Chris Hedges. Clearly, DavidCarson deliberately (and hatefully) blurs matters with such rhetorical gems as “The more people, the more carbon emissions.”
The more heartless fools who openly long for genocidal punishments (such as DavidCarson), the more idiots doing the Nazi population-control goose-step.
This cretin is going to fill us in on the science? I can’t believe it.
From Chris Hedges:
The richest 0.54%, or 42 million people across the world, are responsible for more emissions than the poorest half of the global population, or 3.8 billion people.
Hedges’ source appears to be Heather Price of the Union of Concerned Scientists. She links to an article in Nature. (In case DavidCarson wants to know where such lies come from…)
The lifestyles of the richest 0.54% (~42 Million people) are responsible for more emissions than the poorest half of global population (3.8 Billion people).
and . .with the Clock now ‘windmilling’, population control is a moot point anyhowz . .
So we know that if everybody lived like they do in America, Australia ,UK we would need probably at least 3 planet’s to sustain this type of existence.
So it’s obvious the model is not workable. You can’t just have multiple copies of everything for your own individual use .Gathering more possessions.
We must create a New Model where we co-operate and share the stuff of life .A Use and Access economy instead of a model that says the more possessions you have the more power you get .
This ownership model is what is so dysfunctional, detrimental to planet survival and it’s what has created the use of more resources in the last 40 years than 40 000 and we call this progress .It’s progress towards our own demise people.
We in the West must be the change we wish to see in the world. Others can then copy. Do as I do not do as I say .Leading by example is a fairer more equitable and sustainable way forward .
Having Use of products and sharing those products so we all have Access to the stuff of Life. In this regard people would be happier and have time to enjoy life without worrying about owning their personal copy of everything which is absurd anyhow.
Humans must wake up fast, this individualistic meritocracy is based on fallacies. There’s no meritocracy in heaven why so on Earth. If you are alive you are contributing to the common good which might surprise
many people here , but it is Life that’s Prime Value.
It’s a process ,it never ends .We are part of the process.
I forgot… let’s get down to keeping the planet’s resources for the future generations and stay within our limits of One planet for One Humanity.
Sharing all with all as the fit is not fit until the all is fit.
End this crazy ownership model and possessions obsession it’s driving us all nuts. Nobody wants it only the sociopaths and fuedal lords .
The problem with communism is not the model Its the fact that it has to be forced onto people .
True change can ony come through the human heart. That’s where the real work must be done .
You can’t legislate morality or mandate fairness. It’s who we are ,we must remember this and impliment it through being …through pure being .
We are human beings not Human doings.
So who are we is the only question ! Who are we in relationship to our Mother Earth our life giver and sustainer. Are we not to be good stewards of what we gave been given stewardship over and pass on this understanding to the next generation .Is this not being responsible !
To be or not to be said a fine metaphysician. We never listen to the good guys ,the true masters, we kill them all.
You are on the right lines. Socialism/communism can only be built by a rise of a new consciousness among working people, voluntarily cooperating in the venture to create a new society. It cannot be imposed.
The workers anthem, the International, says as much
No saviour from on high delivers
No faith have we in prince or peer
Our own right hand the chains must shiver
Chains of hatred, greed and fear
And stewardship of the planet is what Marx intended it to be
“From the standpoint of a higher socio-economic formation, the private property of particular individuals in the earth appears just as absurd as the private property of one man in other men. Even an entire society, a nation, or all simultaneously existing societies taken together, are not owners of the earth. They are simply its possessors, its beneficiaries, and have to bequeath it in an improved state to suceeding generations as boni patres familias (good heads of the household).”
In Volume III of Capital, he opposes to the capitalist logic in agriculture, based on brutal exploitation and exhaustion of the soil, a different logic, a socialist one grounded on “the conscious and rational treatment of the land as permanent communal property” — a treatment that considers the soil not as the source for short-sighted profit, but as “the inalienable condition for the existence and reproduction of the chain of human generations.”
“Only by lowering population growth”
That is already happening. Fertility rates are dropping globally. So dramatically that a few nations are now below population replacement levels and are introducing policies to raise numbers again.
The exception are only some countries in Africa but even there the birth rate is falling and family sizes reducing in many countries.
You are pushing against an open door. The guaranteed policy of population reduction is the empowerment of women. Economic independence and education leads to women controlling their own bodies and reproduction which invariably leads to fewer children.
We should not be thinking that every new baby is a new mouth to feed but instead consider each new addition as another thinking brain and an extra helping hand.
‘facts are chiels that winna ding,
An downa be disputed’
(trans.facts are fellows that will not be overturned, And cannot be disputed’.)
As Burns’ wrote
And the facts are clear. It is the system of economics - capitalism - that caused (as you indicate) the problem of population. Ask how did the peasant leave his “pleasant pastures” and move to the “satanic mills” (Blake)? And it is dealing with that is where the solution lies. The land and the resources of the planet have not been exhausted or depleted. The distribution of them, however, has been skewed by the manner of how economy is presently managed and run. I think this is Aleph’s point.
The US military is the biggest polluter in the world and one of the biggest carbon emitters. When Congress passes gigantic military budgets they perpetuate the danger. When the democrats vote overwhelmingly for the NDAA and the new space force (and the space weapons race that is sure to follow) they will cause a dramatic increase in carbon emissions. The democratic hypocrites have to stop crying crocodile tears about the climate problem and stop supporting policies that increase emissions. What is the difference between the democrats voting for the NDAA and a climate change denier? Answer: none.
