To Create 'Welcoming and Safe Nation for All,' Sanders Immigration Plan Would End Family Separations, Break Up ICE, and Tackle Root Causes
Illegal immigration, regular immigration, and identity politics are issues on which I disagree with Bernie and other progressives in some ways.
Obviously, ICE and CBP are Gestapo rogue agencies whose agents get away with murder, torture, and other heinous crimes.
Law and policy take away our civil rights when we’re in a border zone, giving agents way too much power to do warrantless searches, seizures, detentions.
The problem is that the admirable compassion people have for migrants isn’t balanced by an understanding of ecological or infrastructural carrying capacity.
America and the planet already have way too many people. We can’t adequately carry the population load we currently have, especially ecologically.
When you pile too many people onto a lifeboat, it sinks. That’s what’s happening here.
As to root causes–childbirth is #1. Abortion and contraceptives are totally illegal or almost impossible to get in the countries where the main flow of Central American immigrants are coming from. If we want to help stop the migrant crisis, we should make abortion, vasectomies, and contraceptives easily available worldwide.
Bottom line, we don’t need more people coming to America from anywhere, no matter what their race or socioeconomic status.
Wow! I guess the foreign policy conduct of the US in the last 100 years had made no effect on the population flight from Central and sometimes SA to the US???
Wish I thought of the idea that part of the solution would be “vasectomies”!!
Thank you Bernie, the only candidate to look at root causes. The only person saying what so many millions of thoughtful people know.
Well lets now expect a Immigration Plan release from the Warren camp in 3,2,1…
Agree. Bernie 2020!
Bernie is taking on the deep state once again. This is dangerous territory for any politician, but he has no fear. Gotta admire that.
Or FROM america. I saw a woman in her early thirties with FIVE kids the other day. WHY!!! /if people want a roomful, why not adopt and help those ALREADY HERE? Oh, that’s right…the “EGO FACTOR”.
The last paragraph completely erased the nice words you used to cover up your racism and class bias.
Nice try though. White people in the US have a lot of kids, but that doesn’t seem to trouble you.
Because I care about people I don’t know.
Overpopulation isn’t an argument against immigration. Those trying immigrate to the US have already been born. They have to live somewhere.
A greater root cause never tackled or mentioned, the population explosion:
We should have thought of that before we started pumping CO2 into the air. When a place becomes uninhabitable, people migrate. The world is my country, as Thomas Paine said. And the “lifeboat” metaphor is what animates the Amerikkkan Gestapo. I would avoid that one.
Sanders and Warren are old friends and one could say socialists fighting rampant capitalism that put King Trump in office and above the law. Health care for all can not exist with a massive military and wars of choice fir profits for fat cats. Education is not what creates the Fox-head base. Sheeple poverty is necessary to keep order for the chosen billionaires who own it all. The “selection” is the Electoral College and other devices approved by the Supreme Court like gerrymandering, fixing the vote and giving politics to big money.
Bernie Sanders …the activist for our citizens since his youth. How many presidential candidate politicians can you name have been arrested for upholding civil rights? Sanders…the only hope of beating Trump for the presidency and truly building the strength and unity of our country. If only there was a way to stop the DNC from rigging the nomination against him. If only…
Actually, I kinda like the movie “Lifeboat.” Especially the part where the other people in the boat kill the Nazi. Not because he was a Nazi, but because he acted like one. If America is a sinking lifeboat with no water, then impeachment is the same as lynching.
Sanders and Warren are old friends and one could say socialists fighting rampant capitalism that put King Trump in office and above the law.
Warren is no socialist–if you recall, she remarked a while back that she is a capitalist to her bones.
We progressives know it will be rigged, that is a given! But does anyone out there in cyberspace know how to stop the rigging?
Jesse Jackson and Jill Stein come immediately to mind. Farther back was the great Gene Debs, who was imprisoned for his antiwar activism.
Never mind the Malthusianism
Right you are David, and I suspect that not many here are disposed to hear these inconvenient truths. First, Bernie is correct: immigration processes should be humane and fair. Next, we must take care of those who immigrants who have already made lives here and create that path to citizenship. Next, as Bern says, we must make sure that our policies and support for oligarchs and dictatorships south of the border do not contribute to the deeper causes of migration.
But the larger question you raise is also true and co-equal when it comes to discussing this topic. There is nothing wrong with having a secure border, and nothing wrong with creating a process which is fair, but which also takes into account our own needs and which sets reasonable conditions for those whom we would accept. The Emma Lazarus poem is beautifully written (yes, I have read it), but its sentiments were written for a different world and no longer strictly apply. We are not looking for millions more to fill positions that are already vanishing, thanks to AI. All over the world, we have seen the impacts of unstructured immigration that has been encouraged by oligarchs and investors: they obviously want more bodies, more consumers, and governments want more taxpayers. Europeans are now awakening to the costs of these decisions and they are not happy about it–except perhaps for the Swedes, who continue to ignore the serious implications of their open border approach to immigration.
Finally, the climate crisis must be effectively addressed, and much more drastically than provided by the Paris accords. At the same time, as you suggest, a vigorous incentivization of voluntary sterilization should be included as one tool with which to prepare for the future. My two siblings are white, married, and are now past child bearing years. They made that choice freely, and to tell the truth, they have no regrets. Fewer children, of course, will lead to the collapse of the capitalism we have all learned to hate–and that would be a welcome consequence of scaling back, settling for less, reducing the environmental exploitation that is driven by consumerism.
