Trump as Tyrant

Christopher Brauchli

The man who is tenacious of purpose in a rightful cause is not shaken from his firm resolve by the frenzy of his fellow citizens clamoring for what is wrong, or by the tyrant’s threatening countenance.
— Horace, Odes, Bk 1

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, it got worse. However, it was a great way for Mr. Trump to celebrate Independence Day.

President’s son in law Junior Jared, who really is as creepy as he looks, is currently in trouble for various lawbreaking activities designed to move tenants out of a building. I wish he could be put under oath and asked if he discussed this with his father-in-law as the deal was proceeding. A look at the president’s financial records could put legally him in criminal accomplice category which ought to be enough to move him in into “high crimes and misdemeanors” territory for purposes of impeachment. Right now all they’ve got on him is being insufficiently hostile to Putin about which much too much is being made. That and being slow to pay off the ladies with whom he had clandestine assignations. Put the president on a televised legal testimony and let’s see him explain why this is OK. Maybe then he could grant himself a pardon live on global TV.

I don’t think many people thought it could not get any worse. In fact f think most think it will get worse.Ever since Trump was elected there has been real concern that the US will turn into another Nazi Germany. That concern is still there although there is some relief that a dictatorship was not established quickly as occurred in Germany. But all Trump has to do to establish a dictatorship is to follow what is transpiring in Turkey. And Putin himself is another example. What probably should be most concerning is Trump has a large cult-like following. About 85% of registered Republicans typically agree with whatever he does including separating children from families and his behavior during the press conference with Putin. Unlike a normal political following there is no judgements being made about Trump, support is there no matter what. We should assume his supporters would approve of concentration camps, unleashing right wing paramilitary groups, etc. There should be real reason for concern that things will get much worse.
