Trump Buried OMB Report That Undermines Entire Premise of His Deregulatory Agenda

Jessica Corbett, staff writer

While President Donald Trump and his cronies continue to wage war on regulations—particularly those that aim to protect the environment and public health from the onslaught of dirty industries—his administration buried a government report that showed how a decade of federal regulatory decisions significantly benefited the American public.

"That is why Republicans hate EPA and its rules... [they] are a living demonstration of the good that government can do."

By just a quick estimate, adding up a rough median of each of the wide-ranging benefit and cost numbers to yield a conservative total, the benefits are on the order of $750 billion, the costs around $100 billion. Or 7.5 times the benefit. That sounds too precise, but conveys the order of magnitude. You might rather say 5 to 10 time the benefit. Maybe someone would like to add up the numbers to precisely characterize the total range.

Here’s WTF quoting VOX (https://whatthefuckjusthappenedtoday.com): “The aggregate annual benefit from the Obama-era regulations was between $287 and $911 billion, while the estimated aggregate annual costs were between $78 and $115 billion. Reported in 2015 dollars. The regulations offered a net benefit of up to $833 billion.” That mostly confirms my numbers above: you can say the benefits were roughly 3 to 10 times the cost.
