Moments before his State of the Union speech last night, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to keep open the military prison at Guantánamo Bay. The order describes the prison's operations as “legal, safe, humane, and conducted consistent with United States and international law.” This does more than undo Barack Obama’s order to close the prison, signed on his third day in office. It also rewrites the plain, sordid facts of its history.
All of this must be taken in context, with the fact that Muslims didn’t attack us on 9/11.
Trump can’t resist playing the macho tough guy, regardless of the consequences. It throws the spotlight on him and it plays well with his white supremacist, Muslim hating base. That’s as far as his thinking goes and that’s what makes him so dangerous, all the more so because his Republican handlers show little interest in leashing him.
Still, I don’t regard Trump as an aberration. He’s the raw, ugly face of American politics with its carefully polished mask removed. He and the duopoly are just the tip of a very toxic iceberg. The November elections may help to put a brake on his excesses, but it’s going to take a lot more than showing up to vote to cure such a disease infested political system. A healthy political system would never have allowed him in the White House.
It’s our mini-Gaza!
The military prison at Guantánamo Bay is a festering boil on the public face of America. It is a representation of disease within. Best to void it or at least wear a mask.
