Trump Is Achieving His Primary Goal: Division

Robert Reich

Donald Trump’s goal is, and has always been, division and disunion. It’s how he keeps himself the center of attention, fuels his base and ensures that no matter what facts are revealed, his followers will stick by him.

But there’s another reason Trump aims to divide—and why he pours salt into the nation’s deepest wounds over ethnicity, immigration, race and gender.

Dear Mr. Franklin,
I regret to inform you that the Republic you bequeathed us has been lost.

Chaos is a ladder…

Reich sez:
“Donald Trump’s goal is, and has always been, division and disunion.”

Small point of clarification: Chump’s goal is personal enrichment and glorification. The division and disunion are his preferred means to that end.

The division into the “Haves” and the “Have Nots” has been going on for some time now.
Both political parties are equal opportunity dividers. Democrats are much better at concealing it than the republicans.

Just curious, Professor Reich: What is the d-party strategy of identity politics if not ‘divide and conquer?’

And since you cite 4 decades of growing wealth inequality, you’re acknowledging that sixteen years of Clinton and Obama did nothing but speed it along, right?

Because America was so united under the last 4 presidents!

What do you mean, “take back our democracy”? How can you take back something you never had in the first place?

Unite with whom? The Democrats? The preferences of the average American have had no more impact on the Democratic party than the Republican party. Who’s going to save us from them? As usual, Reich is playing backdoor sheepherder for the Ds.

Mr. Reich, primarily an economist and finance expert, never mentions the fundamentally flawed system that allows for the transgressions to continue unchecked.

Never mentions the laws in place that were never exacted to keep the power grabbers in line.

Never mentioned the previous law breakers that were jailed.
Never mentions what the business of printing fiat does to balance of an egalitarian financial taxation system. Incremental tax changes aside.

I think that Putin is using him to achieve his goals, division and disunion. the present squatter in the White House is just a useful tool

Surely you are just being sarcastic, unless you are Rachael Maddow in disguise.

Progressives can win if they stay focused on those issues where they have large majorities like ending the plutocracy, and in their campaigns absolutely minimize those wedge issues that can only take from those large majorities and possibly bring defeat.

For example equal pay for women is not much good if we lose the battle against the plutocrats so that both men and women of the masses lose equally.

If we win the most important, existential battle, the one against the plutocrats then these wedge issues will tend to fade, and can be more easily dealt with.

Let’s all of us that want a fairer society agree to put the wedge issues aside for now.

No I am not. I do believe that he is only a useful idiot. He and his family owe millions to russians and saudis. Do you think they don’t have pressure points?

Point ST
I’d have more respect for Reich if he called out the the Dem ‘leadership’ for the same crap that he calls out republican for - when it’s appropriate.

It’s a KABUKI performance and he always ignores half of the actors

Ok, you are sincere. This is serious, surely you have proof for such a accusation. Please list your sources or at least something to back up that claim. Surely no one would say such a thing without any credible and definite evidence.

“In terms of high-end product influx into the US, Russians make up a pretty disproportionate cross-section of a lot of our assets,” Donald Trump Jr. said
at a New York real-estate conference that year. “Say, in Dubai, and certainly with our project in SoHo, and anywhere in New York. We see a lot of money pouring in from Russia.” Donald Trump, Jr 2008
Eric reportedly told a golf reporter
in 2014 that the Trump Organization was able to expand during the financial crisis because “We don’t rely on American banks. We have all the funding we need out of Russia.”
