“Unless those standing for peace and reason significantly increase their efforts, the United States will, once again, be misled into an unnecessary war with catastrophic consequence”
The “efforts” so far have been largely non-existent from elected officials (as has “reason”) and people with some public voice also mostly silent - of course the mass-media, dominated by corporate entities and subverted by foreign players, do not mention any of the straight-skinny to truthfully and fully inform as is their duty in any free republic.
Re “Fortunately, an alternative strategy is forming. Both the House and Senate have introduced legislation that would bar funding for an illegal, unauthorized war with Iran.”
This bill has an unspectacular 59 co-sponsors in the House and even less probable support in the Senate. I wouldn’t expect it to ever pass.
It’s really up to Congress to voice their opinions on Trump, Pompeo, and Bolton rushing the United States Military towards another prolonged conflict in the Middle East.
They have the Constitutional authority to put the brakes on this car-wreck-in-motion.
If these 535 employees that are working for the people of the United States cannot be bothered to open their mouths about something as serious as potentially murdering innocent Iranians, for their oil, and putting our men and women in the military in harms way, then, why have a Congress at all?
For Trump this is all about poor polling results and the need for a diversion. For others it is about Iran accepting euros for oil in lieu of dollars…everyone has their own reason. The only thing lacking is a 9/11 event. Without 9/11 there would have been no war in Iraq. Hold on to your hats.
Remember that contrary to press reports that the USA not directly involved in the war on Yemen (they hide being its the Saudi’s) , this not the case. The Houthis recently shot down a predator drone over a port City in Yemen and the US Military admitted it one of theirs. These drones tend to be armed and seeking out targets and this demonstrates the US plays a much more active role in making war on the poorest Country in the world.
These guys lie and mislead as a matter of course. It would seem to be part of their job description.
Comparing the two bills, I think this more robust. It not only defines a penalty (impeachment) but applies to any war the US President might pursue.
The version you link to allows the President to attack Iran if he deems there an “Imminent threat”. That a loophole one can drive a Greyhound bus through given GW Bush declared Iraq as an “Imminent Threat”
Saudi newspaper editorial sez:
“The next logical step should be surgical strikes.”
I like it. Let’s start with pre-frontal lobotomies for Bolton and Pompeous and see if that helps defuse the situation.
with M$M on board, this will be almost impossible to stop
I agree. Neither of them has a snowball’s chance in hell of passing.
We pacifists are ‘fighting’ a losing battle these days when all we get are the “Ra Ra’s”, wanting war from all walks of life. Congress with only a very few exceptions, is all in for yet another unwinnable war in the ME. When will this madness end? After the collapse, of course.
Why aren’t the American people (prominent figures, celebrities, academics) demanding the soap box on this? They still aren’t convinced the last two wars were lies?!? Some of the same people responsible for the slaughter and perpetual denigration of a couple MILLION innocent people in the name of the American people isn’t enough? People think they are on the right side of things or don’t have obligation to hold their own government accountable, only to profit from it? They aren’t convinced the Israelis lead a full scale corruption in our congress and media? Are the American people simply bigots? Forty plus years of Neocon-Zionist-Corporate bigotry toward Iran can be called Iranian Aggression in this moment? Let’s be serious here, even if everyone were to claim ignorance of the history of the U.S. in Iran, especially of the betrayal from Reagan and Bush Sr., did Iran perpetrate 911 or did the Saudis with Israeli complicity? Did Iran support ISIS or defeat them while we claimed credit? Has Iran started a war in modern history? Does Iran threaten nuclear war or do the Israelis with their clandestine arsenal and technical know how that was stolen and proliferated from the U.S.A and never prosecuted?
Speak Out Now and don’t be a coward. It could never have an end and the U.S. will never live it down anywhere in the world. We may not be aware of what others think of us, but we surely will become aware of it.
Don’t expect any help from the Democrats!
I wouldn’t at all doubt that trump would like his own war in his portfolio.
If turns out to be Iran, expect terrorists to be created by that action of trumps.
What would WE do if someone dared to fly surgical strikes here?
What if the strategy is for the US Trumpians, scolded for being friendly with Russia, to behave so inanely that the world unites behind Russia?
Airstrikes will almost certainly raise Trump’s standings in the polls.
Sending troops will be a much riskier political gamble – militias in that region know how to fight the hit and run strategy against us and that kind of guerilla warfare will erupt beyond Iran, for instance in Iraq. Our “allies” will only make a token commitment at best.
My prediction is that Trump opts for the bombing.
All signs point to another war: even if President Trump genuinely doesn’t want one. History shows nations go blindly into war, oblivious to the consequences and with a misplaced confidence about the outcome. But the deeper [a nation] gets in, the harder it is to get out’. A war against Iran could escalate into a global conflict. Russia and China claim to have vital interests in the region. The clash of interests has always led war. A confrontation between the major nuclear power will be world war, with immeasurable ‘catastrophic consequences’.
With clean energy growing and the US supplying much of its own oil, the interests of the US in the Middle East seem trivial.
Keeping out others seems a motive there, and satisfying the security of our belligerent Middle Eastern allies.
Our nation has became addicted to war, unfortunately for the rest of humanity.
