Trump Ordered Syria Strike Based on a Secret Legal Justification Even Congress Can't See

Jon Schwarz

On Friday night, President Trump ordered the U.S. military to conduct a bombing attack against the government of Syria without congressional authorization. How can this be constitutional, given the fact that Article I, Section 8 of America’s founding document declares that “The Congress shall have Power … To declare War”?

The deeply bizarre and alarming answer is that Trump almost certainly does have some purported legal justification provided to him by the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel — but no one else, including Congress, can read it.

Trump ordered the Syria strike on a secret legal justification called, the “Donald Trump’s a Lying Mother Fucker Special Justification” clause.

No wonder Congress never heard of it.

Trump just pulled it out of his ass.

Yup. And it’s a fair complaint. It is illegal.

But American presidents do not ask Congress for authorization to send troops to war. They have not done so for decades. They ask for funds. And Congress votes to supply them–more, and more, and more.

It’s a pity to see how even the articles critical of war fall into this blue-red posturing. Both major parties have been clamoring for war, as have the usual cheerleaders at WaPo and the NYT.

These guys are a danger to themselves and others.

Congressional Rep Tulsi Gabbard asked Mad Dog Mattis how bombing Syria related to national interest of the US.

Ol’ Mad Dog said he couldn’t answer that question because it was predecisional and therefor speculation.

Cowardly evasion of truth by Mad Dog Matis came just a few hours before missiles flew. He implies that everything pentogonian generals do is predecisional until the actual launch of an attack on any country anywhere sneaking generals decides to attack next under cover of night.

World war one was as much about the Turkish Ottoman empire as Germany. Hungry war dogs are prodding both Turkey and Japan into becoming strong and aggressive militarily. Things could get ugly, unless we can get Korea to unify under our mad dog instead of theirs.

Trump ordered the bombing to create diversion from his domestic problems. Many commenters have predicted this.
Flexing his presidential muscle he pardons Libby, who he says he didn’t even know. Anybody want to bet he won’t fire Mueller and pardon himself? In front of a supine congress? And a helpless population?
But I’m preaching to the choir.

The legal justification amounts to a subservient Congress, a media who never met a war it didn’t cheerlead for, kabuki stunts meant to pretend our military solves problems, and the realization that the best strategy is always to destabilize.

There’s your “rule of law.”

The US Government on “The Rule of Law” is like a Bank Robber who just shot three people dead in a holdup only to run out and find out his getaway car stolen then whining about how the Police should do something about Car Theft.
