Trump’s Apocalypse Has Been a Long Time Coming

Betsy Hartmann

As the first-year anniversary passes of Omar Mateen's deadly attack on the gay Pulse night club in Orlando, it's worth remembering Donald Trump's apocalyptic response. Out on the campaign trail, he used the tragic event to warn that Muslim terrorism could obliterate the United States. "There will be nothing, absolutely nothing, left," he said. "Can you imagine what they’ll do in large groups, which we’re allowing now to come here?"

Trump's voters don't want to "separate fact from fiction".

Acknowledging facts might force them to take responsibility and address those facts. Ignoring facts while embracing alternative facts and fiction allows them to continue to be irresponsible and blame all of their problems on somebody else.

The demented dimwit listened rapturously to Norman Vincent Peale's jeremiads while sitting at his father's side during his "formative" years in New York. So it is no surprise that DJT through "the power of positive thinking" (and skulduggery) and ridiculous raging rants can be who he thinks himself to be (emperor) and make others do what he directs them to do. Peale also urged his followers to never accept defeat ("I Don't Believe in Defeat"), which also explains DJT's combative, pugnacious nature (which he mastered under the tutelage of his idol, Roy Cohn). He also mastered prevariaction while still in knickers (intently observing his father).

i think you're being too kind. maybe there aren't even words in english for who this subhuman and his cabal are.

A sacred psychosis

With all due lack of respect: This crap was not invented by the Pilgrims over even by Christianity. It is at least as old as civilization itself, and constitutes the robes in which many an overwhelmingly successful politician has clothed their psychopathic souls.

Yeah, this goes back to the ancient Hebrews, with their totalitarian god of absolute power.

But still, USA has got a real, real bad case of it. I think worse than any other nation in memory.

The US is indeed the 21st century's only fundamental Christian theocracy.

Not that I enjoy saying it, but to some extent much of America deserves Trump. The last 37 years has seen a major step backward by a sizable portion of the population. Bigger homes, SUVs mindless consumption have gone on at a pace people would not have expected before Reagan. It's as if Reagan handed American's their worst sins on a platter, for one last binge. It has not stopped for over three decades. A couple interruptions and then back on the binge. Now, all checks are due. Climate is #1 but there's: health care, public education, mental illness, guns, and a basically collapsed long term economy. Tech alone is not going to save us, nor is the "service economy." The drunk is REALLY over. That's why everyone on Trumps team seems like a felon. They are.

That's why atheists are lumped in with " the other " in the political pecking order ( 95% of American voters would never elect an outed one ). And, agnostics are also so distrusted in politics and business, too. Unusual religions are marked as odd ( untrustworthy ) by dress or physical appearance, eg. the Sikhs being mistakenly killed for being Muslim. And, no remorse from the perpetrators. They're too stupid to know, learn or even care.
It's a religious vigilantism that will lead to another internal war. And, you can take that to the bank almost anywhere in America.

This is "What's the Matter with Kansas?" by Thomas Frank except now it applies to much more of the country. People who vote against their own self interests in order to follow some crazy, bullshit ideology. Gov. Brownback bankrupted his state and Trump and his fellow scumbags are trying to do that to the whole country. I am deeply ashamed that so many tens millions of Americans would follow this appalling, corrupt, reckless monster.

How true, how true. A careful look at so much of our predicament can be attributed directly to the 'Reagan Revolution'. And while he seemed to be, at least on the surface, an amiable, good spirited, well meaning sort, it is what he allowed to be unleashed that is the root cause of today's problems in America. I guess you could say he was a Trojan Horse of sorts.

You needed to lift up the rock to see the bitter troll that Reagan really was, He literally could not do his job as president of SAG, other actors had to tell him what to do. In his small mind, voila--unions must go. It built from there. And entire philosophy built on resentment posing as a totally fake "Morning In America" It was more sinister than most realize. As governor he coined the term "welfare queens," in regards to the redwoods, "You've seen one tree you've seen them all," On and on. The nation at large really did not get the whole package and did not bother to look. He was a fairly dumb man about cause and effect. A "B" actor (as was his wife) who wanted revenge (money). Shallow as they come.

What an excellent news commentary, Betsy Hartmann!
Comments here are a nice complement to this insightful piece.

We should never lose sight of the fact that the foundation of "trumpism" are those unfortunate individuals who fell by the side on account of globalisation and automation. It seems to me to be rather unrealistic to expect these people to be patient and/or understanding.
Trumpists represent a major social failure, a betrayal of the working people by the leadership of both parties, as well as a betrayal by the captains of industry and finance. Trump is obviously a "false prophet", but without genuine leadership (leadership which seeks to craft society with an eye on the well-being of its least member, leadership which supports a commonsense system of taxation, financial and environmental management), Trumpism will remain a force to reckon with.

And as president, he was already in Alzheimer's grasp. and what is so ironically sad, is that he said, "“I now have absolute proof that smoking even one marijuana cigarette is equal in brain damage to being on Bikini Island during an H-bomb blast.”

But the truth about marijuana and Alzheimer's is . . .
(This study was on THC, but also studies on CBD indicate it can be effective treatment for not just Alzheimer's, but for other dementia as well)

And if you all think it is frightful enough that we have a reality show real-estate lying whore who has classic near maniacal symptoms of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (among other mental imbalances), just consider this: (Warning, if you are not concerned about a doddering fool in control of the USA, be forewarned, you will likely be after reading this.)

Just think Reagan/Alzheimer's 2.0

I meant when he was younger, with SAG. We all know now he had dementia while POTUS. Please keep the periods separate. When he was president of the Union, he was just incompetent. He was NOT a bright man like Kennedy, Carter or Clinton. Comparatively he was kind of an idiot when young. A B grade actor, that's IT.

The Cosby Stills & Nash lyrics seem appropriate:

"Long Time Gone"

[Intro. (Electric Guitar)]

It's been a long time comin'
It's goin' to be a long time gone

And it appears to be a long
Appears to be a long
Appears to be a long time
Yes, a long, long, long, long time before the dawn

Turn turn any corner
Hear you must hear what the people say
You know there's something that's goin' on around here
The surely, surely, surely won't stand the light of day, no

And it appears to be a long
Appears to be a long, mmm
Appears to be a long time
Such a long, long time before the dawn

[Instrumental (Electric Guitar)]

Speak out you got to speak out against the madness
You got to speak your mind if you dare
But don't, no don't, no, try to get yourself elected
If you do you had better cut your hair, mmm

And it appears to be a long
Appears to be a long, mmm
Appears to be a long time
Such a long, long, long, long time before the dawn

It's been a long time comin' (Long time comin')
It's goin' to be a long time gone (Long time gone)

But you know
The darkest hour
Is always, always just before the dawn

And it appears to be a long
Appears to be a long
Appears to be a long time
Such a long, long, long, long time before the dawn

[Ending (Electric Guitar)]

Agree with Hartmann 100% but there is a missing paragraph. The neolibs Bush, Obama and Hillary are just as dangerous but far better at masking their insanity, far better at fooling us into thinking that they are rational human beings.
