Trump’s Chaos is Covering for Stealth Escalation Overseas

Katrina vanden Heuvel

While Washington is fixated on President Trump’s tweets, antics, lies and Russiagate, the administration is ramping up a stealth escalation of our military involvement across the Middle East. As Naomi Klein warns, Trump’s “rolling shock of the chaos and spectacle” distracts from radical actions both at home and abroad.

Yeah, but let's keep beating the "Russia-gate" bogus story to death. Because that's all the Liberal Dems have. They don't oppose war....they love it!

"We need someone with a backbone to stand up as Sen. J. William Fulbright (D-Ark.) did in 1966, convening hearings that exposed the folly in Vietnam and explored ways to bring the conflict to an end. Where is the Republican Fulbright of today who will question our current course before it is too late?"...Katrina vanden Heuvel.

Yes, indeed, and where is the Democrat? Also, Senator Fulbright's warning against a volunteer, professional army, has also gone unheeded to the great detriment of this culture.

"There seems to be a lack of concern among too many people about the state of the nation, and a too easy acceptance of policies and actions of a kind that a generation ago would have appalled the citizenry. The apparent broad acceptance of the "volunteer army" idea comes to mind- a concept completely at variance with our historic development. Up to now, a blessing of our system has been that those who go into the military service, whether by enlistment or through the draft, could hardly wait to get out. But today, because of the exigencies of the times, there is a chance that we may turn our back on this fundamental principle: a large, standing professional army has no place in this Republic."...J. William Fulbright, The Pentagon Propaganda Machine.

Reinstatement of the draft is a necessary step in reversing the militarism that has captured American policy and culture.

I get the sense that there is an escalation of fighting but no overall strategy. If everything is left up to the Pentagon of course the military will trying to win the fighting. But Trump seems incapable of even having the attention span to work on an overall strategy. He just goes along with acts of war that lack any purpose. Why would any American president take sides a conflict between Shiites and Sunnis. It makes no sense. Is it based on his business interests? What is that goal in Syria? How can that conflict be brought to an end. Trump does not have the ability to be commander-in-chief. The US foreign policy is in free fall and will be until someone with the ability to be president holds the office. It is a tough job. There is no way Trump can do it without handing pretty much everything over to competent advisers and that is not how he does things.

What part of the "overall strategy" that eternal occupations and wars equals eternal revenue for the military industrial media infotainment complex (MIMIC) don't you understand ?

It doesn't get any simpler than that and Trump's theatrical cover enables the GOP controlled Congress to execute the overseas mission cum laude while keeping the domestic policy wrecking crew at full throttle and on steroids !

I can't look at the news very much. It makes me sad about the failure of humans to even consider the freedom to Love as the prize. Death is the prize now and it's costing us everything.

Yes, by turning over the various wars to the generals, led by a general as Sec Def, all that you have is tactics with no overall strategy. For generals, it is all a kind of game in which winning is as clearly defined as football. Taking Mosul is a win and there it simply never occurs to the generals to ask why take that city any more than athletes ask why play football or basketball. The game in itself is exciting and brings tangible rewards for the players - this is why the wars under Trump will go on without any purpose other than war itself.

KVH says, correctly, that Russia-gate and Trump's continuous antics distract from large-scale world-ravaging activities of the US gummint.

What she does not say, however, is the Democratic Party fans the flames of Russia-gate and Trump-idiocy, nor does she mention that thanks to Obama, Hillary & the Dems, Trump entered the office with myriad wars in Syria & elsewhere ready-made & primed for escalation.

The soup in which we are cooking to death was brewed by the Democrats.

We need to keep repeating these facts until libs/progressives/lefties finally accept that the Democratic Party is not their ally, but instead, as the young-folk say, a 'frenemy.'
