Trump’s War on the Courts, the Press, and the States

Robert Reich

With congressional Republicans in the majority in Congress and unwilling to cross Donald Trump, the job of containing Trump’s incipient tyranny falls to three centers of independent power: the nation’s courts, its press, and a few state governments.

Which is why Trump is escalating attacks on all three.

The judiciary

So Robert, what were you preaching when the Clinton's and DWS were cheating Bernie out of the nomination. Also, many out here would like a serious investigation into the Clinton Foundation, especially during the time Hillary was Sec of State (and when she was running for President). And how about Bill's influence with the Attny General? We could go on, but that would be a good start. Then we could go on to the war crimes.

"With congressional Republicans in the majority in Congress and unwilling to cross Donald Trump, the job of containing Trump’s incipient tyranny falls to three centers of independent power: the nation’s courts, its press, and a few state governments."

There is nothing untrue about the introductory sentence but attention to actual context is severely and even misleadingly blinkered.

We are facing the END OF AN ERA and the fractional reserve banking system, empire of corporations, nuclear and oil companies are kicking and screaming because they've run themselves into the wall.

Which of Trump's actions have been, are or will be in court? Standing Rock; communities resisting fracking and pipelines; EPA, BLM, you name it...

Trump's own business practices as well as his "communications" practices are virtual dog-whistles to any and all fraudsters caught with their pants down, flapping in the breeze, to unanimously invert, conflate, alternately overwhelm and recede in a pumping action. Strangely enough it is reminiscent of a heartbeat, though thoroughly lacking the essential and wise dimensions of an actual heartbeat.

Trump also is waging war on the universities, starting with a threat to defund Berkeley where Reich's is employed. He is about as unAmerican as it gets but he has the ignorant masses of religious zealots behind him who are also more kindly referred to as populists and the Republican in Congress are afraid to step in at least until they get their tax cuts and other measures to help the rich. We knew the Trump was unfit to be president and he proves us right every day with agenda of seeking total control and combating the truth.

The always relevant " 3 R's ": Reduce, Re-use, Recycle.

And now 3 more----- Resist, Refuse, Regroup! Non-stop, rolling, no-cooperation!

Prof. Reich,

You forgot something in this piece about "countering the incipient tyranny" (of Trump): You listed 3 centers of "independent power" as courts, the press, and "a few state governments."
You forgot WE, THE PEOPLE! Aren't all those demonstrations, sit-ins, (esp. the great NO DAPL camp-in), and switchboard-jamming calls to Congress, and raucous meetings in home districts a 4th "independent source of power? Sometimes you reveal your elite status as a commentator and teacher and former member of the Cabinet.
(Though I appreciate your analysis of events and politics and economics, and your humane take on what's important for America)...

Will tRump goad California to secede? Why should California be ruled by a despot their citizens do not want?

Peace.

When you are so use to privilege being treated equal seems unfair and oppressive. Trump needs to stop whining.

#9

Trump's lies have worked well for him because he accompanies them with whining. He won't let go of a successful strategy.

If Trump withholds Federal funds, Governor Brown needs to require all organizations that withhold Federal taxes from California residents who pay state income tax to redirect their Federal withholds into a state escrow account that will make up whatever funds Trump and his band of pirates withhold.

The escrow account could then morph into the State Bank that Ellen Brown has proposed.

I am wondering if he has dementia. Not a word either about the tornadoes and the aftermath in Louisiana.

#11

He needs to quit. Oh , I almost forgot- his daughter ( who apparently is more of an adult)is down in DC supervising him.

#12

I don't think he has dementia. To Trump a natural disaster might be an opportunity to get a good price on a piece of property. He roots for bad things to happen like the financial collapse in 2008.

One could imagine the US breaking up if Trump continues down the road to despotism. There could be a West Coast country (California, Oregon, and Washington State). And a Northeast country (New England states, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland). And maybe a Midwest country (Minnesota and Illinois). The first two countries would be among those countries with the largest economies in the world. Both would have far more people than Canada. Maybe all three could eventually merge with Canada.
