Trump the Entertainer

Trump the Entertainer

Neal Gabler

The media continue to view Trump through a political lens when an entertainment lens would be more appropriate.

Trump is a puppet who needs no strings. He distracts and bedazzles on his own. Meanwhile, Pruitt, Perry, DeVos, et al. do their work under Pence’s watchful eye. Yes, the buffoon-in-chief is at work, but so are many others at very different and much more nefarious tasks. Dated, but recommended reading: The Wrecking Crew: How Conservatives Rule by Thomas Frank (2008).

This is not Entertainment.

This is Assault!

Assault to anyone with a sense of honor.

Man, you are giving * waaaay too much credit. He is an idiot and buffoon, and those are the best of his traits.

Democracy has been taken from us, I think in '63. Then came Reagan.

When the wind shifts abruptly - you are left with choppy seas, and that is where we are now.

Even Common Dreams is becoming a form of entertainment, as we have all been reduced to spectator status.

Realistically, what I am seeing is that this is how we march to Armageddon - spouts of protest here and there, OCCUPY for example, or Standing Rock, but in the end we all seem to sense that this is going to end badly.

Gabler touches on the fact that the Trump show is in fact just an extreme example of a long running trend.

Sheldon Wolin described it best in his ‘Inverted Totalitarianism’ model:

‘It is all politics all of the time but a politics largely untempered by the political. Party squabbles are occasionally on public display, and there is a frantic and continuous politics among factions of the party, interest groups, competing corporate powers, and rival media concerns. And there is, of course, the culminating moment of national elections when the attention of the nation is required to make a choice of personalities rather than a choice between alternatives. What is absent is the political, the commitment to finding where the common good lies amidst the welter of well-financed, highly organized, single-minded interests rabidly seeking governmental favors and overwhelming the practices of representative government and public administration by a sea of cash.’

The Obama presidency should be seen as a kind of meta-performance of Identity Politics Theater. We had a well-spoken African American using the lofty language of phony inclusiveness but continuing & often expanding the worst policies of the reviled & ridiculed Bush.

Trump is kind of like Obama’s negative photgraph image, continuing & expanding everything bad from Bush & Obama, but now employing the language of bigotry & ignorance.

This is not entertainment, even if applying the Lincoln motto of :“You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.”

No, not at all. This is ENTRAINMENT- formerly a component of entertainment, but in the reductionist tunnel vision of the trumpsters this was apparently one clear vision on variations of the model to be adopted

The fact that Trump was elected POTUS, tells me that P.T. Barnum was correct when he said:“THERE IS A SUCKER BORN EVERY MINUTE”.

To equate Obama with Trump and Bush (senior and junior) is a main strategy in the republican playbook for idiots. Republican party leaders and rightwing media rabble-rousers want those who uphold democratic ideals to consider an evil record and an evil agenda as the same within the democratic party. You’ll have to make a better argument to explain our dire circumstances than it’s Tweedle-dee vs Tweedle-dum. Trump’s behavior certainly incorporates vile racism, misogynist patriarchy and good old boy grandstanding, but the republican party leadership are complicit in an apparent rise of fascist corporate control of government and deadly class warfare. After the Las Vegas massacre, Trump’s “Now, America is truly in mourning,” (emphasis on truly) was another of his veiled statements about whom he considers ‘truly’ American; flag-waving country western fans and grandiose casino hotel operators.

I wish what you wrote had the slightest bit of factual truth bro, but it doesn’t. From the get-go, Obama reappointed Robt. Gates, Bush’s Sec/Def & Master of the Iraq disaster, then he expanded the war against the Afghan people, tripled the drone strikes, launched a new (& disastrous!) war in Libya. Oh, & launched an all out war on whistleblowers, torturing PFC Manning for 2 years, & invoking the Espionage Act more than any previous president since WWI. And exactly what kind of Constitutional lawyer would summarily execute the alleged 9/11 mastermind gangland style & feed him to the fishes instead of bringing him in for interrogation and giving him a legal trial? Did you know that Obama dropped an average of 72 bombs per day in 2016, on the poorest people on the planet? And were you trying to imply that I am republican stooge? I never voted once for a Republican. I voted for Obama in 2008 but after that I was done, voting Green or Socialist ever since. Peddle your Democrat Kool-Aid elsewhere, chum.

Thank you, Wellan for a substantive piece full of unassailable facts! Well done.

DJT is NOT entertaining in any sense…the only role for which he is fit would be as “Chucky” in all those Chucky horror films. His (DJT) nasty visage, evil behavior, and red hair need no makeup, no acting, no coaching as he is the very embodiment of C. (Have never seen any of these movies, just the horrific trailers.)

With all the nut jobs that still support trump, there must have been more than one born every minuet.
