Two Dozen Senators Tell Biden It Is 'Past Time' to Finally Close Guantánamo

Cool slogan. The Mayor of DC ought to paint that out front of the White House right next to the Black Lives Matter painted on the road.

I’m of the belief that there is no such thing as democracy.
Even the greeks who have been lauded with its inception only allowed free men to engage in the process. Slaves and women were relegated to do what they were told to do or else

When will Cuba open a prison on US soil? Maybe a military base, too? Oh, wait. We’re “exceptional.” We’re “special.” The rules we impose on others can’t be applied to us. “Liberty” means we can never accept equality.

Yes, keep the pressure on to shut Guantanamo. I hope more Senators get onboard. But I’m very doubtful. Biden sent the matter to be “studied” which, in practice, means ignored. He said he’d close it before the next election which indicates he won’t take action until close to the next election . But the next election will see a tidal wave of neo-fascist activism which will result in Republicans going extreme right and many Dems pulling to the Center-right. That’s a guarantee that it will be blocked by Congress.

The cheating started before the ink was even dry, but yes, it sure has gotten rather wild in the last few years. Hard to believe actually.

And, that is precisely why the oligarchy wants its “Democracy” everywhere on the planet. But you forgot to put in the /s.

This was my biggest disappointment in Obama! He should’ve closed this monstrosity during his administration. Sadly the obstructionist Republicans blocked his attempts. Crimes against humanity have been committed here and those in the previous administration should be charged in the International Crimes Courts. War crimes!
Close this monstrosity now!

Have to say that your take on it is better than mine.
I was thinking about selling tickets to see Trump, his spawn and minions in the cages at gitmo.
Especially after we open normal relations with Cuba

Make it “at the gallows” and I’ll buy a bunch of front row tickets. I know oodles of folks that would love to witness that.

From the treaty Teddy Roosevelt signed when we stole Guantanamo:

"Between the United States of America and the Republic of Cuba for the lease (subject to terms to be agreed upon by the two Governments) to the United States of lands in Cuba for coaling and naval stations.

The United States of America and the Republic of Cuba, being desirous to execute fully the provisions of Article VII of the Act of Congress approved March second, 1901, and of Article VII of the Appendix to the Constitution of the Republic of Cuba promulgated on the 20th of May, 1902, which provide:
ARTICLE VII. To enable the United States to maintain the independence of Cuba, and to protect the people thereof, as well as for its own defense, the Cuban Government will sell or lease to the United States the lands necessary for coaling or naval stations, at certain specified points, to be agreed upon with the President of the United States."

Does anyone spot any way whatsoever that we are maintaining the independence of Cuba and protecting the Cuban people by running the base and prison at Guantanamo?

Yes. The ancient Athenians were troubled by slavery and racism and sexism. A deeply flawed society. I would note, though, that their political system was superior to that of modern Western “democracies” in at least one crucial respect: They used sortition to select their legislators, not popular vote. Sortition is a process of selecting legislators by lot; in the U.S., it is used to select persons for jury duty. “Representative democracy” through popular vote leads to factionalism and the capture of government by Big Money interests. These trends would be all but eliminated if legislators (and presidents, vice-presidents… even judges) were selected by sortition.

Yes, the political, economic, elite love that word as a cover for their nefarious deeds. How many times have we heard this: fill in the country." We are bringing them freedom and democracy"!

Makes perfect sense in America. Shut it down just when we start convicting domestic terrorists.
What a country. I think DJT would like a quick tour first as well.

I have always liked Cicero’s concept of Democracy: " participation in political power". Most Americans do not realize that they really have no real participation in political power; especially when it comes to the U.S. military!

Compassion, empathy, or any sense of guilt for the illegal torture and confinement of individuals caught up in the mayhem of U.S. “exceptionalism” is seriously lacking in the minds of most Americans.

Hi Godless:
Yes, let Cuba have their land back. I think that any nation( Cuba) who sends doctors to nations in war, instead of soldiers------- that nation ought to get the Nobel Peace Prize.

Mollybear, how can you claim it is too soon? The United States has been a rogue nation ever since the Bush Crime family opened up this grotesque prison. It is in blatant violation of the Geneva Conventions and the UN Convention Against Torture. Gitmo It is precisely the reason the rest of the world considers the US the “Evil Empire”. It is the greatest recruiting tool for al Qaeda to date.
