Voter Suppression in a Pandemic Election

The US electoral system has never been what regular people thought they knew about it. Who gets to vote has been controlled in numerous ways from the nation’s founding until today; and those in a position to control it to their advantage who have the means to do so are still doing it inspite of civic-minded efforts to encourage people to register to vote and to exercise their franchise. Acquiring political power and keeping it is the goal of political parties. Plainly, and despite what they say, it is often not in a party’s interest to have everyone cast a vote. The US electoral system must be modernized and made more consistent at the local, state, and national level. A national electoral study group ought to be created and tasked to propose a better system. It won’t happen for the same reason it hasn’t been done before: politicians and their political parties like the current system just the way it is.
