Watch Live: Elizabeth Warren Officially Launches 2020 Presidential Campaign

Common Dreams staff

This post will be updated...

In Lawrence, Massachusetts—the site of the 1912 "Bread and Roses" textile workers strike—Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) on Saturday is expected to officially launch her 2020 presidential campaign.

"Lawrence has a history of working people coming together to make change, where the fight was hard, the battle was uphill, and where a group of women led the charge for all of us," Warren said in a video posted to her website ahead of Saturday's event.

Wonderful. Hopefully the purity police that hang around Common Dreams will realize that a nearly perfect candidate is far better than a 3rd party spoiler who is also NEVER perfect. I consider the purity police to be nothing better than failure junkies. Some even hope for a catastrophic collapse. I suppose these dreamers sometimes think something better will miraculously arise. That’s a (sick) laugh.

Mais oui.

Well, it’s early. Unless people are suggesting we write in a 3rd-party candidate on a Dem primary ballot, it wouldn’t make much sense to insist we not vote for Warren because a GP candidate would be better.

#6

Exactly. Like the comment sections of other internet news outlets plus YouTube, and of course, Facebook, this comment section has become a cancer that like many cancers, that consumes its own host. That’s why many large newspapers have gotten rid of their web article comment section.

And sadly, the purity police dominate even the non-Sanders wing of the Democrats. Look at what they are doing doing down in Virginia to deliver that fellow commonwealth back over to reactionary Republicans.

“Most humans, in varying degrees, are already dead. In one way or another they have lost their dreams. Their ambitions, their desire for a better life. They have surrendered their fight for self-esteem and they have compromised their great potential. They have settled for a life of mediocrity, days of despair and nights of tears. They are no more than living deaths confined to cemeteries of their choice. Yet they need not remain in that state. They can be resurrected from their sorry condition. They can each perform the greatest miracle in the world. They can each come back from the dead.” ~Og Mandino~

Worth keeping in mind, and repeating when necessary. If the Trump experience hasn’t sobered us up to the point of understanding the level of danger our republic is in, who then will save us?

#9

Wait a minute. You couldn’t possibly be saying it’s wrong to hold a Democrat accountable for sexual assault. . .could you?

#10

The piece doesn’t identify the would be murderers of then and now. Today’s “takers” are so powerful, we are all in danger losing our ability to return from the whirlpool we find ourselves in.

#11
  1. Are you advocating for shutting down comments sections where opinions you don’t support are expressed?

  2. I’m sure that appearing in blackface and lying about it and forcing a woman to perform oral sex have nothing to do with your party handing power back to the Rs in Virginia. Because the entire d-party apparatus in Virginia calling for resignations is an indication of the purity police at work.

#13

I was thinking more of the absurd “blackfacegate”. But yes, they have gone overboard on some cases of the the “sexual assault” stuff too - like Al Franken and even Garrison Keillor up Monkes Tale’s way…

The proper way to address “sexual assault” allegations, which these cases are not anything close to forcible assault, is to empanel a confidential fact finding investigation over it, and also put in place a confidential process of reconciliation and restitution for the aggrieved parties.

#14

I personally know people with clean pasts, I’m sure we all do. We need to recruit these people and let those with tarnished records join on as staff, etc. Drain the swamp.
But then how do we allow a “Trump” to become president? There is something afoul here.

#16

Sadly that leaves it wide open for the party dirty tricksters.

#17

Yes, and the purity police in the Democratic Party are working hard to hand all of Virginia’s executive branch offices - currently held by genuine progressives (Virginia has become a California of the east coast) over to unelected hard-right wing Republicans.

And it is not a matter of "opinions. Asserting wrong false facts to support fabricated conspiracy theories is not an “opinion”, it is the equivalent of fraud. In most other places on the internet, it is the racist, extremist alt-right that dominates the discussion (go to the comments on the most popular YouTube of “San Francisco (Flowers in Your Hair)” to see what I mean. Here it is a new kind of “left” that merges with the alt-right on many issues.

The endless negativity is hard to take too.

Trump never claimed to be a choir boy, far from it. He openly bragged about loving tax loopholes, not disclosing income statements, grabbing pussy, and being so popular he could shoot someone and face no consequences.

And guess what? When the American appetite was running high for an ‘outsider’ candidate, the Dems ran the ultimate insider who had proven in every campaign that her support dropped over time, a candidate who brought the word ‘liar’ to the minds of voters more than any other.

But you guys go ahead and blame the purity police for the decisions your party – the all-knowing losers of 1,000 seats over just 4 election cycles – makes over and over. I’ll repeat, and this includes the subject of this article, you’d better start praying for a recession to start within six months cuz no one has announced who can beat Trump.

#19

So you dont think that humans are changeable or reformable? Aren’t the greatest saints past sinners?

You do know about the sexual conduct of Martin Luther King, don’t you? The young Bernie Sanders has some nasty things on his record too.

We should choose leaders based on the kind of person they are now judged by their record over the past 10 years of so. The records of Northam and Attorney General Herring with regard to concrete acts of fighting racial discrimination defending civil rights are impeccable over that time frame.

#20

That 2020 election going to Trump would not be about Trump. It would be about crazy America.

#21

Watch the news. Things are not going to be the way they SHOULD be. Things have changed, as Dylan’s song portrays.

#22

You’re wrong again. The Republican now in line to assume the governorship your party is in the process of fumbling away is the elected Speaker of one of the two houses of the Virginia legislature. Fourth in line, but your party has three people who just can’t help but appear in blackface (alongside someone in KKK robes!) and force themselves on women.

Why don’t you care about what African American voters in Virginia have to say? go ahead, tell us how you know better than the NAACP:

#23

Yes, very true. And they elected the current executive branch members in Virginia for similar reasons too.
