Watch Live: Sanders Joins Philly DA Larry Krasner for Roundtable Discussion on America's 'Broken' Criminal Justice System

Common Dreams staff

Denouncing a criminal justice system that "incarcerates 2.2 million people and disproportionately incarcerates people of color," Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) joined Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner, author and professor Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, and Civil Rights Corps litigation director Premal Dharia for a roundtable discussion on possible solutions to America's mass incarceration crisis.

This subject doesn’t really need a roundtable discussion. It’s simple, first legalize all drugs. failing that, legalize marijuana. Many people using harder drugs would switch to weed if this happened. Second, make police brutality a serious crime, with citizens killed by police without cause( and I mean real cause), a capital offence.
Third, commute all drug sentences . Fourth, make private prisons illegal. Fifth, require all prosecutors to follow DA Krasner’s guidelines. Do this and watch the prison populations drop dramatically, and stay that way.

It’s all about the Money and Control of the masses.

Nothing more.

Tweeders is so right to make clear that the Democratic Party has certainly NOT
opened this topic to any discussion, anywhere –

Also notice from NJ’s Star Ledger newspaper …
In report on our new Gov. Phil Murphy’s efforts to legalize Marijuana they never
mention the Drug War. Is this by some agreement to NEVER mention the Drug War
in connection to legalizing?

My anger only increases with liberal organizations which refuse to come together –

We have to be aware that this prison system is a threat to every American …
but especially to minorities -

And that includes WOMEN …
There is an interesting HBO documentary I saw earlier today from 2017 which is called
“I am Evidence” which is about female rape cases and the rape kits –

In many of our American cities, these rape kits sit unexamined because of lack of money/
resources. Some are kept in falling down buildings (Detroit) by the thousands. Many are
out of date. Many have been destroyed. But there are thousands – and in some cases
10,000 plus, that have been found where the DNA has not been identified and there is no
pursuit of the case.

Often the rape kits aren’t even moved on to be examined for prosecution because male
police officers tend to not believe females – misogyny at work.

In some cases where cities have begun to move some of these older cases and the rape
kits on for testing, they have discovered numerous victims tied to the same serial rapist.

These are rapists who should have been taken off the streets long ago, but they weren’t
because of lack of resources and lack of respect for the women reporting rape.

I’m sure we all recognize the terror of the “Phoenix Program” carried out in Vietnam and
likely other countries by the CIA/US.
In a discussion today of “Forbidden Books” list … with Mark Crispin Miller… this book by
Douglas Valentine came up… and his comments shocked me when he connected the dots.

In looking at the CIA’s criminal activities for Elites/fascists, it is easy to see that from its
founding it practiced violence/assassination/false flag event/torture/coups all over the planet,
actually toppling democratically elected leaders …

but by the time of the JFK coup, it became clear that this CIA criminal organization and its
activities were now being carried out at home, as well.

Similarly, I didn’t connect the dots either from the “Phoenix Program” to the programs
developed after 9/11 here – Homeland Security/Patriot Act – but Miller made clear that we
can and should see it that way. Miller makes clear that the Phoenix Program has also been
brought home to the US to fight “terror.”

I often as well comment on Abu Ghraib which seemed clear to me that it was merely an
opportunity created for the US to practice torture – and as Miller confirmed today … it
wasn’t only waterboarding. No fascist government can exist without systems of torture.

Mark Crispin Miller is author and Professor of Media Studies at NYU
You can find him on YouTube, as well

JFK certainly understood the threat from this outlaw organization called for/created by Council on Foreign
Relations as WWII began to end (1943) and OSS was ending.

This also provided the connections with the press which allowed “Operation Mockingbird” to be written and carried out. Phil Graham Family/Washington Post were “ranking members” of the Council on Foreign Relations and Graham headed up the Mockingbird Program to involve others in media in the program.

America’s Use of Terror in Vietnam – The Phoenix Program

A shocking exposé of the covert CIA program of widespread torture, rape, and murder of civilians during America’s war in Vietnam, with a new introduction by the author

In the darkest days of the Vietnam War, America’s Central Intelligence Agency secretly initiated a sweeping program of kidnap, torture, and assassination devised to destabilize the infrastructure of the National Liberation Front (NLF) of South Vietnam, commonly known as the “Viet Cong.” The victims of the Phoenix Program were Vietnamese civilians, male and female, suspected of harboring information about the enemy—though many on the blacklist were targeted by corrupt South Vietnamese security personnel looking to extort money or remove a rival. Between 1965 and 1972, more than eighty thousand noncombatants were “neutralized,” as men and women alike were subjected to extended imprisonment without trial, horrific torture, brutal rape, and in many cases execution, all under the watchful eyes of US government agencies.

Based on extensive research and in-depth interviews with former participants and observers, Douglas Valentine’s startling exposé blows the lid off of what was possibly the bloodiest and most inhumane covert operation in the CIA’s history.

The ebook edition includes “The Phoenix Has Landed,” a new introduction that addresses the “Phoenix-style network” that constitutes America’s internal security apparatus today. Residents on American soil are routinely targeted under the guise of protecting us from terrorism—which is why, more than ever, people need to understand what Phoenix is all about.

As The Corbett Report reported last year, Erik Prince, the founder of Blackwater, has slithered out from his hiding place and re-emerged as a figure on the political stage. He is now advocating for a rebirth of the US’ infamous “Phoenix Program” to target the ISIS terrorists the US created, and he is advising Trump from the shadows. Today Douglas Valentine, author of The Phoenix Program and The CIA As Organized Crime joins us to discuss what The Phoenix Program is and why its resurrection is so ominous.
