Sure, he can’t actually reschedule the election for the sake of rescheduling it. But he can declare a national emergency and subsequently martial law. Then he could just cancel the election, telling us that we will have one at some undisclosed future date after the tribulation was over.
This is exactly what fascism looks like.

“this is how democracy dies,” says a white person while POC roll their eyes and wonder “but you have to be a democracy in the first place for the democracy to ‘die;’ when was the US ever a genuine democracy?”

Make america great again - America was never “great” lmao. Face it, people: this Fascist clusterphuck was always the INEVITABLE outcome of building a society in which THE central tenet - the ideological tentpole - was white supremacism. Should’ve rooted that shit out; we tried telling ya…for centuries

The good news is the extreme reactions indicate some progressive success; the bad news is the repressive measures may work for this outlaw regime.

If there is no election, then Trump and Pence lose office on January 20th and the Speaker of the House becomes prez. That would be Nancy Pelosi.

Meal Team Six may be on El Presidente’s side, but many more are on the side of the Constitution. The stunt would not be long lived. I’m bullish on lampposts.

I have visions of the Tangerine Twit being frog marched out of the White House by President Pelosi dancing in my head.

Ha! Is that a Mussolini reference?

So, out of the frying pan, into the fire? (It would be nice if Trump’s successor weren’t one of the malefactors who led us down the slippery slope to neo-fascism in the first place!)

or just declare the election delayed, and let the order languish in the courts for a few years, while the election is delayed until the courts decide if the president can delay the election.

I fear that too many people just don’t know how the government works. The speaker of the house could not automatically assume the presidency. If there is no election, the president is still the president. There are only five ways a POTUS can lose his job. He can time out after 8 years. He can be removed by the impeachment process. He can die. He can resign. Or he can lose his re election bid. If none of those things happen by January 20 of 2021, Trump will still be president.
The only way a speaker of the house can be POTUS would be if the president and Vice President die at the same time, not allowing for a successor to be named and duly sworn in prior to their deaths.
Remember, many in the Lincoln cabinet wanted him to suspend the 1864 election. He chose not to. Let’s face it, if we can’t have elections on time, how hearty is our supposed democracy.

Wow. Cool. Sounds like you’re really enjoying the Circus. I bet you enjoy Pro Wrestling too. Isn’t it cool when one of the wrestlers slams the other one onto the mat? Wow. I bet that hurts so much. And that inspiring victory by the stronger one. Wow. Isn’t wrestling great? And imagine, US politics is even more real than wrestling. So it’s that much more exciting and thrilling. Gosh. I can’t wait to find out who wins the next political contest. Well, one thing is for sure: the Murcan people always win cuz elections are free. That’s the glory of the Murcan system. It’s totally fair and objective and balanced. Its a democracy, by golly. And in a democracy the people always win. Gotta love it. Pass the popcorn dawg. Let’s roll.

It is impossible to think of the Trump administration as a legitimate government. It is more of a branch of an international criminal cartel that is deeply involved in money laundering, fraudulent financial schemes of every type, and other criminal enterprises conducted under the guise of traditional political activities. In the process, criminal behavior has become the norm, not the exception. The final act of these lawless plunderers is to declare traditional elections null and void. If that fails, they will abscond with the money average people have saved in their national treasuries, leaving their countries virtually bankrupt. Expect the same from the Trump administration.

I wondered about that, too, and then I found these items:

Amendment XX:

“Section 1. The terms of the President and Vice President shall end at noon on the 20th day of January, and the terms of Senators and Representatives at noon on the 3d day of January, …and the terms of their successors shall then begin.”

Presidential Succession Act of 1947:

“Additionally, based on authority granted by Section 3 of the Twentieth Amendment, the act [of 1947] [which puts Speaker of the House next in line for succession] applies to situations where the president-elect, alone or together with the vice president-elect, fails to meet the qualifications for the office of President. Based on that same authority, the act also applies to situations in which there is neither a president-elect nor a vice president-elect on Inauguration Day.[29]”

Amendment XX, Section 3:

“Congress may by law provide for the case wherein neither a President elect nor a Vice President elect shall have qualified, declaring who shall then act as President, or the manner in which one who is to act shall be selected, and such person shall act accordingly until a President or Vice President shall have qualified.”

If there is no President-elect on January 20, Trump’s term ends, and the Speaker becomes Acting President until the outcome of the election is determined.

The US has been on “the EDGE of autocracy” ever since Senator Joe McCarthy (R-Wis) established his Kangaroo Court in 1950. The SCOTUS appointment of Dick Cheney and his puppet Dubya to the White House in 2000 accelerated the roll down the slippery slope.

This is troubling, especially coupled with other things he has done. What isn’t something many on the center-left want to confront is their roll in us being at this point. Their corruption and undermining of our democracy. Them giving the power to the state to spy on us in violation of constitutional rights (like mass NSA spying in violation to basic constitutional rights), the Patriot Act (which Biden tried to take credit for at one point), Obama allowing people to be indefinitely locked up, the undermining of democracy that is deals based on the NAFTA model and the WTO, the privatization by both parties of everything in sight. Right now, some Democrats are pushing to privatize control over water as we speak. Even during a pandemic the “leaders” (LOL!) of the undemocratic Party cannot be moved to support single payer, or even expanding Medicare in any way. They are indifferent to the horrible conditions of state and local governments, indifferent to the mass suffering out there. Or, our horrible foreign policy. Who has Pelosi and Biden and the like supported in Venezuela? Someone even worse than Trump, and that person just declared himself president. And who put down Occupy but the Obama administration, with the help of Democrats at the local level? Again, this should be condemned, but what the liberals and the moderates want to do is pretend they had no role in us being in this position, when they know damn well we were led by them to this point just as much as their comrades on the right. If there is any condemnation of this, it better not come from the likes of Steney Hoyer, Schumer, Clyburn or Pelosi. Look at this joke primary they just ran, and look at their clown nominee for president. Think, if he wins, that we won’t be facing someone just as bad as Trump in four years? For that to not be the case, we would need actual solutions to our problems. Where are Biden’s solutions to anything, and even if you can point to somewhat decent policies he says he supports, given his record, what he has said, who is surrounded by, who believes a damn thing he says anyway?

Yes, it was Obama’s 3rd and 4th Dubya regime term strategy, combined with the Democrats’ dynastic promotion of Clinton in 2016 that enabled Trump’s ascending the throne.

Four years of corporate Biden will indeed open the door to Trump or worse in 2024.

My point exactly. If there is no election, there is no transition of power.

Even if there is no election, Trump’s term still ends at noon on January 20, and power transitions to the Speaker, who then serves as Acting President until a successor is determined.
