We’re Demanding the Government Come Clean on Surveillance of Social Media

Hugh Handeyside

The Trump administration is ramping up surveillance of what people say on social media — and it’s doing so largely in secret.

Social media surveillance by the government raises serious concerns about free speech, racial and religious profiling, and privacy. The ACLU today filed a Freedom of Information Act request to find out how agencies like the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security are collecting and analyzing content from Facebook, Twitter, and other social media sites.

From Ralph Waldo Emerson, Self Reliance:

“Speak what you think today in hard words and tomorrow speak what tomorrow thinks in hard words again, though it contradict every thing you said today.”

(and fuck with “their” minds)

They have always been doing this. That people now aware of it means it no longer a secret. There a lot of “pretending” that this has not always been the case which gives the impression the Genie can be put back in the bottle.

Due to the nature of US Intelligence and spy agencies there no real way this can be regulated without either disbanding of those agencies OR IMPRISONING those responsible. The record shows clearly that the only ones that go to prison are the ones that reveal this surveillance.

Do people really think that Martin Luther King as example was not being spied upon?

With “Homeland Security” involved we’re into the Patriot Act – good luck to us all–!!
