We Shall Overcome

We Shall Overcome

Philip Lederer MD

It was a frigid Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Boston. Outside, snow drifts were piling up next to Dorchester Bay, but inside the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, my wife, 3-year-old son, and I sat comfortably on an auditorium floor. The room was filled with a multicultural group of children and parents awaiting a holiday concert by the George Russell Jr. and Company jazz band.

Haven’t had time as yet to read much about …
Reverend Drs. William Barber and Liz Theoharis, …

Will try to get to more info on the movement –

MLK, Jr.'s movement came out of AA churches – but let’s remember that Christianity
had been taught to African enslaved here in order to make them easier to control:
“Pie in the sky when you die.”

Wisely, Africans enslaved here used those teachings to free themselves – they were
taught to READ the Bible. They could also use church services as a time to communicate.

And as members they followed teachings of “Christianity” as we all wish they would be
followed – not to subjugate any human being on this planet, but to bring fairness and
justice to our societies for all.

And how did they square with the 200 or so verses in the Bible accepting slavery as an acceptable practice?
“Be kind to your slaves”…

Excellent article. I think a lot of the ideas are still practiced today. Both in the oppression and opposition. Not sure why this didn’t get more readers.

Thanks very much.

If Martin Luther King was alive today, he would say we are losing…he would tell us to get off our collective asses and stop preaching feel good bullshit. He would say it is time to confront our oppressors, not celebrate black history month.

stub –

Who said that they “squared” with it?

Quite the opposite –

Again – they used their ability to read and communicate against the system of slavery.
Again – the Bible was used to teach them to READ which had previously been denied them.
Again – the Church meetings permitted them opportunities to communicate.
Often by tapping of their feet.

AND, the African American non-violent campaign to overturn Segregation in the South not
only succeeded but set the highest standards for us all to follow.

Same with the Homosexual campaign to free themselves from “Christian” oppression put in place
by the vile propaganda which was so forceful that it convinced even the parents of homosexual
children to abandon their children, hate their children, and throw them out of their homes.

Neither has the oppression of women by “Christianity” yet been lifted as the Vatican continues to
refuse to acknowledge the full personhood of females as it acknowledges the full personhood of
males. Nor, of course, to overturn the propaganda of their “Hammer of Witches.”

Organized patriarchal religion - male-supremacist religions – underpin Elite/wealthy.

Manifest Destiny and Man’s Dominion Over Nature were the licenses issued by Christianity to
permit Elites/wealthy to exploit Nature, Animal Life, and Natural Resources … and even other
human beings according to various myths of “inferiority.”
