What Have Whistleblowers Done for Elite Journalists Lately?

What Have Whistleblowers Done for Elite Journalists Lately?

Jim Naureckas

To the extent that you have aided and abetted Snowden, even in his current movements, why shouldn’t you, Mr. Greenwald, be charged with a crime?

Do any of the corporate talking heads deserve the title of “journalists”?

Looking at definitions of the word ‘journalism,’ we see pretty clearly that it involves the gathering of information and its development into a form that is presentable as news.

The Free Online dictionary: The collecting, writing, editing, and presenting of news or news articles.

Merriam-Webster: the collection and editing of news for presentation through the media

Wikipedia: gathering, processing, and dissemination of news and information related to the news to an audience

Interestingly, the OED defines ‘journalism’ as the profession of journalists instead of the other way around.

More interestingly, Dictionary.com gives an expanded definition that is more suitable to today’s corporate model: the occupation of reporting, writing, editing, photographing, or broadcasting news or of conducting any news organization as a business.

My point is that the corporate news celebrities who are the subject of this article are involved only with the last task of classic journalism: reporting it. They are fed the information and the copy is already written for them. All they have to do is toe the corporate line.

Accordingly, having no appreciation for the task of gathering the news, the talking heads have no appreciation for the value that whistleblowers provide.

The difference between whistle blowers and “elite” journalists is the difference between a national spiritual leader and a parrot.

Look, Biden has a tough job: proving he is even stupider than is Dick Cheney.

I’m reading The Burglary, the story of a group of peace activists who broke into an FBI office in 1971 and exposed the truth about FBI spying on the anti-war movement and especially against black activists.

It’s struck me just how much we owe to whistleblowers then and now, how much we know that we wouldn’t without their courageous self-sacrifice. Without them, we wouldn’t have heard about many of the war crimes committed in our names or the extent of domestic spying and official sabotage.

The mainstream media is selling a story, namely of US benevolence and righteousness. “The US is the world’s policeman, fighting for democracy here, fighting evil there. At home, Uncle Sam totally supports democracy and the Bill of Rights…and so on ad … infinitum.” If someone tells the truth, that this is just a fable to keep the powerful in power, this is most upsetting to those who’ve based their careers on spinning the myths that their bosses love.

It seems that whistleblowers are persecuted to the extent that the powerful have things they need to hide. Given the extreme level of persecution today, there’s plenty more sh*t still to be uncovered.

Of course. And the answer to that question is Zero members of our governing bodies supported Snowden, Kirakaou, Manning Assange etc. NONE. It is one of several reasons I will never cast another vote. Lesser of two evils voting is why we are where we are today. When voting dwindles to the single digits the government will lose all legitimacy and the change we need can finally begin. ( as it nears this just wait - there will be a huge push to make voting mandatory).
