Back in the 60s, the two best known comedians of color were Bill Cosby and Dick Gregory. They were neck and neck with Gregory perhaps a little more in demand and popular at that time. Cosby developed his phenomenal comedic skill and Gregory let his career go to mix with the people under siege of racism, as the article says.
A few years ago a friend asked me who my heroes were and I ransacked around in memories and said “Maybe Dick Gregory”…my friend was horrified. We both are Southern and white.
He was a great man IMO.

always, in addition to being extremely bright. Not just a credit to his narrowly-defined race, he was. and is, a credit to the entire Human race.
