Is Sen. Sanders a democratic socialist again? He dropped this issue during his campaign to appeal to the middle class. Democratic socialism would clearly have no chance with today's generation. For those who don't know, it does include a system of legitimate poverty relief (welfare). It is reality-based. That is, it recognizes that not everyone can work (health, etc.) and that jobs aren't always available for all.
The US went in the exact opposite direction. The Clinton administration ended actual welfare aid, and took the first steps to similarly "reform" Social Security, targeting the disabled. Liberals, focused on the middle class (later revised to "working class") ignored the consequences, even as the overall life expectancy of the US poor fell below that of every developed nation. Our war on the poor is widely considered acceptable.
In short, Americans today embrace an anti-democratic socialist agenda.
