Why Israel Feels Threatened by Popular Resistance in Palestine

Ramzy Baroud

Why did Israel kill many unarmed Gaza protesters and wound over 2,000 on Friday, March 30 and on the following days, when they clearly posed no threat to Israeli soldiers?

Hundreds of Israeli soldiers, many of them snipers, were deployed to the deadly buffer zone that the Israeli army has created between besieged Gaza and Israel, as tens of thousands of Palestinian families held mass rallies at the border.

It would be merely ironic, but for the destruction of so many innocent lives, that Israel aided and abetted the rise of Hamas as a counterweight to the leftist and secular PLO.

Both sides lack the type of leadership that would have a chance of resolving this seemingly endless conflict. And now the US also lacks the type of leadership that could play a key role in finally getting a peace agreement for a two-state solution. It is totally discouraging and painful to follow as the years go by and the hope for peace seems to grow ever dimmer. Sending Jarad Kushner over there didn’t seem to do any good. No surprise. I don’t think Trump has anyone with the type of diplomatic experience who might have a chance at a breakthrough. He is nominating a man with anti-Muslim views as secretary of state. The least we can do here in the US is to try to stop Congress from approving Mike Pompeo. If Pompeo becomes secretary of state the situation will even be worse than it is now.

Obama accomplished nothing either. His Secretary of State is BFFs with Kissinger, Saban, and Bibi.

D-Party grifters need to look in the mirror.

And if this article has a lesson it’s this: Putting your hopes in factions like the PA, Fatah, and Hamas–or the D-party!–is a proven strategy for handing power to the hopelessly corrupt. Power to the people!

Khaled Abu Toameh, the journalist who reports for the Jerusalem Post, U.S. News & World Report and NBC News, put it: "Israel is a wonderful place to live … a free and open country.

Arab women in Israel live longer than Arab women in any Arab country.
Arab babies in Israel have lower infant mortality than Arab babies in any Arab country.

Hadassah University Medical Center in Israel established a registry for Arab donors of bone marrow and stem cells to facilitate life-saving transplants. The registry at Hadassah Hospital is the only one in the world for Arabs and will no doubt save the lives not only of Arab Israelis but also of some citizens of Arab countries, not a single one of which has a registry of its own.

I keep hearing this line "the Israelis are just like the Nazis", which is SO

disingenuous! Here’s the _largest_difference in that comparison: The Jews
never declared they would “make the streets run with the blood of Germans”,
nor did they vow to “push the Germans back into the sea”! These are
sentiments that the Palestinians relate every single time they gather in ANY
strength, and that they privately expand on in bloodthirsty ways.
I do NOT understand how those who reside with me on the left continue
to blame Israel for being the “victor” over the constant attacks from their
neighbors, the media, the left, and even their fellow Jews.
They’ve survived 3 wars that they never started, they’ve lived through
constant attacks from mortars, missiles, and various personal attacks by
cars, trucks, knives, and bombs. And yet THEY are constantly being
accused of being the “perpetrator” of the situation, instead of the victims
they truly are!
The Palestinians have NEVER accepted the United Nations Resolution
181, that created independant Arab and Jewish states, with an Special
International Regime for the city of Jerusalem. IF thay had, the land they
occupy today would be MUCH larger than the state of Israel! But the Arabs
refused to accept ANY international decisions that gave ANY land to the
Jews, even though they had been the Arabs’ neighbors, on that same land,
for centuries! So war ensued, and has continued, in various forms, to this
very day. That the Palestinians have refused to accept Israel in ANY fashion,
have continually called for her derstruction, have called for the slaughter of
all her Jewish citizens, and somehow, with ALL THAT, it’s the PALESTINIANS
who are somehow viewed as “the victims”!
The entire conflict could be ended with a very simple, very easy move by the
Palestinians: Just recognize Israel’s right to exist! In the first place, your dreams
of “bringing Israel to it’s knees” is just that, a dream! Israel has been in existence
too long, has too many friends and connections, and, bluntly, has too many BOMBS,
for ANYONE to drive it off it’s land. So to recognize that, recognize them, and move
on. I’d be willing to bet Israel would help them build a great nation, something their
Arab “brothers” have failed to do in 72 years! It would also help the Palestinians move
into the world community, in a way that does NOT include terrorism or the death of it’s
children!
Peace is the hardest thing to get anyone to believe in. The Israelis have offered peace to the Palestinians many times. Are they beyond that point now? No, but they are tired of being both attacked, and being viewed as the perpetrator. Have they often gone beyond their own beliefs, in their misguided attempts to keep their country “safe”? Of course, and even most Israelis would agree with thaqt view. If Palestinians _REALLY_wants to “undercut” the Israeli position, they should recognize Issrael, declare peace, and then ask the Knesset and the U.S. Congress for foreign aid! But whatever they do, they MUST move beyond the status quo, and the easiest way to do that, the most surprising and attention-grabbing, is to finally, after all this time, declare peace, be done with the conflict, and let their citizens FINALLY walk in peace among their neighbors! To do anything else is to remain mired in the past!
