Why the Feds Punk Out When Confronting White Rightwing Insurgents

Glen Ford

The armed right-wing activists that seized control of a federal wildlife sanctuary compound in eastern Oregon have already committed – and conspired to commit – enough serious criminal violations of U.S. law to land each of them in federal prison for the rest of lives.

"That’s why I think the Lords of Capital are much more afraid of Donald Trump than they are of Bernie Sanders. They think Trump might stir up more of those white bearded bastards, many of whom hate Wall Street almost as much as they do the federal government – which is a real problem for U.S. law enforcement."

The Lords of Capital would reel back in an energetic orgy of laughter were Trump to ascend to the throne. His ability to dumb down the masses further would be viewed as a miracle by the Lords. Trump would be their patron saint.

Why do they still have media access, electricity, and running water... let alone toilet paper?

#4

Precisely, the Murkin Yahoos occupying the refuge headquarters pick battles they know they can win and they know that ANYBODY who gets caught in Wall Street's crosshairs meets the fate of JFK, MLK, RFK or OWS post haste.

Not only an inheritance of the slave patrols (this country) but across history an agent of those in power, the nobility (so "noble") the "owners" of all, all the land, all the game, all the people (cross that out and use peasants, servants and slaves). English records from 1225 indicate a violent criminal by the name of Robert Hode may have once lived. Before long this became myth and eventually the name Robinhood emerged as a standard. Historical records are scarce, after all this is the scum of society, as such, the bottom social layer and the top layer would not record the real condition of the lowest layers - not unlike now. Robert Hode in surviving tales managed to be a rebel and to kill the rich. The tale survived, despite the "nobles" (as they like to think of themselves). I suspect this is hardly the only such folk tradition across history. One could include the Jesus tradition as well (depending on whose Jesus at any time as the legend became thoroughly co-opted by the rulers) as a rebel, reformer, of one who "casts out" the wall street of the time, consorts with the lowest elements of his time and is wrongly accused and murdered by prosecutors and "police" (police, as such did not exist then, but the function was there).

Exactly, Glen Ford was writing a good piece and should have found a different ending than that weird digression and simply wrong last paragraph.

Right you are.:kissing_heart::yum::blush:

Some accounts of the origins of the Second Amendment allege it was passed, at least in part, because slave owners wanted the right to form militias to suppress slave rebellions, a constant worry for them. Similarly, local laws were passed in slave owning communities requiring all able bodied men to carry a firearm to church, as there had been slave uprisings while all the local slave owners were busy getting sanctified.

I was stunned by Ford's statement, "one out of every eight prison inmates on the planet is an African American". I knew, of course, that the US locks up more people, both in absolute numbers and as a percent of the population, than any other nation, and that African Americans are disproportionately targetted by the Prison Industrial Complex, but I'd not done the math that projects that disproportion to the global scale.

One out of every eight prison inmates on the planet is an African American.

Horrendous ..

The Guardian: " if the gunmen were Muslims or blacks they would be dead ".

True, also that is exactly what happened to the original and rightful owners of that land who were murdered and had their land stolen from them a long time ago!

#10

Precisely. I read on the MSN news site several few days ago that they were going to turn off the power to the refuge, but since then, nothing. Maybe they got scared that those 'patriots' would suffer from the cold--brrrrrr.

Well no one can deny Fascism has its populist component. But it is something the elites figure they can control -- until suddenly they cannot. Last time it took 250 divisions of the Red Army to deal with it. I do not think it will be so easy this time.

This is the crux of the issue, and bears repeating:

"...how is it that the Superpower of Policing and Prosecution seems to fear a confrontation with groups with names like the Oregon Bearded Bastards?

“The white, rightwing land grabbers who are in armed occupation of federal property can’t seem to buy a confrontation with President Obama’s FBI.”

"The reason is really quite simple: the U.S. criminal justice system was not created to control white militias or greedy ranchers or gun-toting racists and Bible-thumpers. For most of U.S. history, these were prime stakeholders in the American project to build a White Man’s Nation."

White Man's Nation.

That's who makes the rules, enforces the rules, owns the politicians who enact the rules, and controls the media that frames the dialogues in support of said rules & related protocols.

I think the so-called 2 tier justice system is actually at least 4. Tier One and Two are occupied by the wealthy, or 1%ers, and the apparatchiks in the police and security state who protect their interests. Those " professional fall guys " cross into law enforcement, the military, the judiciary, corporations and middle managers in all levels of gov't. Tier 3 are the broad middle class who can afford good legal representation and have decent community support systems. Wealthy black and other minorities would slot in here, as well. Tier 4 is the current prison population Mr. Ford speaks of. Primarily black and urban in the past but now increasingly becoming the poor and uneducated of all races and location, etc. Poor women are in this tier and represent a fast growing segment, too. Think " Mittens " Romney's very telling remarks about the 47%, here. The funny thing about the Bundy Buckaroos and the Hammond Eggs is they're " old " millionaire families who don't make most of their money from ranching, anymore. While some deluded member or two of their posse still might have spurs that jingle, jangle, jingle: these are White Privileged Family Bible Thumpers or LDS Renegade Missionary Folk, take your pick. These Sultans of Sod Bustery would feel quite comfortable in the homes of Gov. Paul La Page of Maine or on the campuses of Liberty University and Oral Roberts U., too. They're zealots for The Predestination Crowd who originally founded this joint. As such, the blacks, the wommens, the poor and all non-pale faces are " not chosen ". And, therefore, don't deserve god's grace or justice. Same as it ever was, same as it ever was .... in the greatest democracy the world has ever known.:sunglasses:

mrsannhitts, sometimes I could swear that you're channeling Molly Ivins before an edit.
That's a complement, enjoy.

Nice analysis.

Great article. But I don't think its a problem for U.S. law enforcement because they are all fellow conservatives.

Ford is usually on the mark, but missed it with this one. The reason, imo, the inaction by the FBI etc is probably at strict orders from the WH. With Trump et al spewing hatred and anti-government rhetoric they know that this has the look of grist just waiting to be ground by that crowd. A heavy-handed response will not end well for the Obama admin. Also, the usual msm sensationalism seems to be missing and these "sons of liberty" pretenders are getting the media attention they deserve - very little.

These guys are a joke and deserve unrelenting ridicule. They're so clueless they riled a group that anyone with a scintilla of common sense would steer clear of, the American Birder.

"Apparently, it’s okay for white militia types to take on the government, with little or no retribution, but there’s one group that the armed protesters don’t want to take on – birders. An apparently abandoned federal wildlife refuge building might seem like a logical place to hold a petulant revolution, but it’s not so abandoned and the birders are not sympathetic. In an open letter in the Daily Kos, Kevin, a wildlife teacher and nature photographer who goes by the name, Norwegian Chef, posted a “warning from the birding community to the terrorists in Oregon: "We’re watching you.”...
