Unless you are in one of the STEM fields, getting a degree is not cost effective and is usually just 5 or 6 years spent partying and learning what we used to call “cocktail party chatter” - interesting but useless info. Taxpayers might well be justified in paying for medical or engineering degrees, but if you want to spend $100,000 to get a degree in Culinary Science or Performing Arts, you should pay for it yourself. Subsequent employment and salary rates are suboptimal and a degree is not likely to distinguish you from non-graduates.
I might add that when federal government pays for physician education and training, that individual should become responsible to serve in a place where doctor is badly needed. We had this in the 1950’s and 60’s. The time would be two years service for every year or partial year the individual received assistance. Also slap this craft with continuing education just like public school teachers have to accomplish.
Educate 60,000 engineers right now.
Well, with free college, at least the pointless degrees that have no future will not bury the kids under a mountain of unpayable debt.
