Why We’re All Becoming Independent Contractors

Why We’re All Becoming Independent Contractors

Robert Reich

GM is worth around $60 billion, and has over 200,000 employees. Its front-line workers earn from $19 to $28.50 an hour, with benefits.

Entrepreneurship is the new “trickle down” theory. More neo-liberal lies so the rich can get richer.

It’s a jungle out there. Independent contractors, give me a break, this scheme is simply part of the new Social Darwinism. There isn’t much difference here from other past forms of good old American fraud, engineered by sundry snake oil salemen, con men, ponzi scheme hucksters, and flim flam men.

In the “olden days,” everything was piecework — you got paid by the number of pieces you produced. Lace doilies, gloves, shoes, whatever. But that was “reorganized” when factories and mills became the major sources of production. As they have been until fairly recently.
Now, through “independent contractors,” freelancers, and the like, we have gone all the way back to piecework. This has increased through “right to work” legislation.
Welcome to the growing poverty of workers.
