With Threats to Investigate Mueller, Critics Warn Trump Is Approaching 'Red Line'

Julia Conley, staff writer

"Be ready to take to the streets. This is an attack on our Republic."

#2

One good thing if Trump fires Mueller, is that when Nixon fired Archibald Cox, the special prosecutor, it was the beginning of the end for Nixon.

#3

We’re here and we ain’t going away

#4

From the article:

“…the accusation of ethics violations were ‘rich coming from the most conflict-ridden administration in modern history and an obvious red herring.’”

Trump’s ongoing violations of the emoluments clause are a perfect example. Another is Ajit Pai’s carrying water for Verizon—his former employer—which will no doubt earn him a big fat job offer when his term at FCC expires.

But we knew this going in. So the question becomes “What is to be done?” We could wait for him to follow in the footsteps of Tricky Dick Nixon, resigning to avoid impeachment; the problem there is that Trump seems congenitally intransigent and intractable, preferring to double down over folding every time.

Oh well, maybe some brave whistleblowers will break ranks and come forward to testify.

#5

Or…pie in the sky…his family could have him committed, only they can prevent this forest fire from spreading further.

#6

Newsflash: This country has LONG since been a Republic. Can you say Oligarchy or Fascist State?

#7

This story uploaded the other day raises some concerns with that, that it might be possible given the current GOP that Trump manages to fire Mueller and get off scott free.

#8

Curious that Pai, being of Middle Eastern (Muslim) descent, should be picked to head the FCC by a rabid anti-Muslim …

#9

Congress needs to appoint a special prosecutor to conduct an independent investigation. That person could not be fired by Trump. But this seems unlikely as most Republicans are willing to go along with virtually anything as long as it is associated with the Republican Party. Country, morality, democracy, you name it, none of these appear to matter to the Republicans anymore. They slid down a slippery slope and with Trump have reached the bottom.

#10

Its not curious. Trump’s only requirements of people that work for him are complete loyalty first, corruptibility second and any semblance of competence third. As long as Pai is his loyal dog, no problems with a muslim. That whole anti-muslim thing is just red meat for his base. His base is the only thing he has got. Don’t be fooled.

#11

The threats are entirely justified. I have zero issues with investigations but they must be impartial. The number of anti trump and hillary connected personnel is unacceptable and nakedly partisan. As are the rules for lying to the FBI which were not applied to lies told by Hillary staffers, and the same for evidenciary rules not applied during her investigation but now applied by Meuller

Start over clean, don’t defend the indefensible because of tribalism

#12

Well yeah a persons base is what they have.

#13

The beginning of Trump’s end came on January 20, 2017.

#14

Pai was selected by Obama, on the recommendation of (seditionist) McConnell.

#15

He is Indian as in East.

#16

Nixon was forced to resign because the press; the courts and the Congress were functioning institutions that had the support of a majority of Americans.

Has our incipient dictator openly attacked our press, our courts and our Congress?

Are those three institutions of civil society stronger today or weaker than they were on January 20, 2017 (Inauguration Day)?

Today, there is little chance that a firing of Mueller would be “the beginning of the end” for the present occupant of the White House.

#17

That damned liberal Mueller and his leftist FBI must be stopped! Investigators must be entirely without political views, as is always the case with US Attorneys, DAs, judges, cops…

#18

I’m afraid they have not yet reached the bottom. Remember the difference between a Russian optimist and a Russian pessimist: the Russian pessimist says things can not get worse. The Russian optimist says, oh yes, they can!

#19

Unless Trump is removed from office soon, the beginning to the end of America was nascent on January 20, 2016.

#20

Yeah, definitely a different paradigm now with Trump compared to Nixon. You make valid points.
