As the nations of the world meet in Paris to address climate change, it is critical that women play a central role in these historic negotiations. Gender equality is central to effective climate action. The world cannot afford to neglect the needs of half the world’s population, nor ignore their talents and potential in innovating solutions.
Ms. Robinson and Ms. Verveer open the door to a necessary and overdue conversation. I think they are sanitizing the language by not mentioning the frequency of rape, sexual violence, and the desperate embrace of prostitution that often presents the only way for women to feed their families when societies entirely break down (or are bludgeoned into that same state).
Also, in any discussion about women's role in leading the Green Revolution, Vandana Shiva's name should head the list. After all, she speaks for the world's millions of women peasant farmers who hold a knowledge of soil reconstitution that can do much to capture CO 2.
