Yellow Vests Demonstrate in Paris as Notre Dame Donations Highlight Wealth Inequality

Julia Conley, staff writer

The contrast between the French government's and upper class's response to Monday's fire at Notre Dame and ongoing inaction to combat income inequality, was a primary driver of mass protests in Paris on Saturday.

The old allegory of the fish not recognizing water reminds me of the breadth and depth of ‘culture’. Culture is a boundary setting framework of ideas by which to extract value. These resonate across substance, content and dynamics. The hegemonic gate-keepers (water faucet feeding the sea) are called ‘trend-setters’, marketing styles, economic trends, race, gender etc… - think of any and all ‘catch phrases’ and ‘chains’ of command, supply… sort of what the dystopian themed texts movies have been trying to unveil and mirror for decades and centuries.

Even in the US, people are donating massive amounts.

Meanwhile, Flint STILL HAS NO CLEAN WATER!!

People would rather support a dead piece of concrete and wood than living, breathing human beings.

We are a sick species.

As someone said on French TV the other day, they’re probably going to turn a profit.

Not much has changed. Wasn’t its construction funded by papal indulgences, sold to the wealthy as a way of saying only poor people have to go to hell? Didn’t Martin Luther object to indulgences on the basis that all that money could go to help the poor instead of giving the pope and his buddies an ever more extravagant lifestyle?

Fancy people with fancy lives trying to out do each other. Not a surprise.

For the most part, planet earth would have been much better off if humans had never evolved.
We tend to ruin everything we get our hands on in the quest for a profit.

I have no idea what you typed but it’s French and that’s enough for a heart. The Yellow Vests keeping up the Beautiful Struggle while the bullies backed by the billionaire ‘investor class’ literally are impoverishing the world. When will Americans realize their own Ruling Class is the enemy, not the Muslims, nor the dispossessed, not the Socialists, nor the Unions?

My post is in support of the yellow vests… European media reports this morning that police clashed with demonstrators. I hope the movement is here to stay…

I am actually on my way to my favorite French bakery to buy bread. Has nothing to do with the Yellow Vests, just what I do. Viva la France!

Enjoy your baguette or whatever kind of bread you buy and toast to those courageous protesters who literally put their lives on the line.

How about other species as well? I think people want desperately to hold on to something, and Notre Dame is part of that history. People are donating from the US- is that the religious connection=probably. Still, I wonder if these same people would help the homeless, or two or four legged?

And most people on this site and others will never admit that we have overpopulation, and that is at the root of the problems.

I agree with you 100%, I have done my part, no kids.

One of those left-wing virtues is learning another language.

In this case, there is enough in common with English, or can be scavenged from elsewhere to guess that Harry_Pjotr wrote “I adore the Movement of the yellow vests”. Harry_Pjotr suggests in his reply that the French word ‘adore’ tends to also mean ‘support’.

Me neither- I know it is a hot button subject but it should not be. People think sometimes that a no kid person is attacking those with kids when we are not- we are just trying to get people to listen, and to stop being in denial. It’s like climate change ( polite for global warming). One poster even said that population was a minor issue- huh??? ZPG has been around for over 50 years, and is now known as population connection! I am tabling for them at an event next week. They are a great organization that works with people and issues all over the world including environmental, public health, education and more. More people need to stop being so timid about population control and speak out loud. The Leader of population connection even wrote an editorial about this in one of their publications. He also wondered why so many in so many words including leaders of all sorts are not addressing this issue ? I applaud you!

Yes! Other species have their own lives, but some people truly believe that they only exist so that humans can use them for their entertainment!

This article, and other articles, more strongly support a Christian Socialist view: that aiding our fellow man is more important than rebuilding a pile of stone. The Christian Socialist can take it back 800+ years, and say that the well-being of French people back then was more important than building Notre Dame de Paris in the first place.
– So put off rebuilding, and tend to the people. And accept that the walls of the burned cathedral may fall in and it becomes a ruin comparable to The Coliseum in Rome.

Now, to the immediate complaint: I thought France was considerably more socialist minded than the USA. Much of their economy is state controlled. [We get the word for state-controlled, ‘dirigisme’, from the French.] And you would think that in French society and in the French economy it would not be possible for corporate bosses to become as rich as billionaires. What have they failed to do, Leon Blum and the other left-French leaders?
